'Blue Army soldier' tells the tale of Rosie O'Conor, a silk stocking linker who worked in the Sunbeam factory, in Cork, Eire. The song has a traditional Irish jig feel. Here are the Lyrics:

VERSE 1
Rosie O'Connor - a silk stocking linker -
lived out her days on the north side of Cork.
She once thought to leg it and live like a tinker
but, when she was 13, she legged it to work.
Now, Rosie had brothers and sisters behind her,
so off she would tramp, every day, to Blackpool.
On Fridays, at tip-up, her Ma would remind her:
"'Tis your twelve-and-six keeps the youngsters in school."

VERSE 2
A blue army soldier was Rosie O'Connor - 
who heard Sergeant Poverty rap at the door,
and, knowing five sisters depended upon her,
joined the long ranks on the Mill factory floor.
She donned blue fatigues like the rest of the women;
back-brushed her hair and wore uniform shoes.
She worked in the roar where the threads needed trimmin’,
glad of the work – there was naught else to choose.

VERSE 3
And many’s the lad, whose eye fell on Rosie,
thought he might make a Cork wife of the girl.
They swore that her life would be easy and cozy,
if she would stop work where the silk bobbins whirl.
But pencil was used to write her pay docket;
sevens and threes, she could easily swap.
Says she to the lads, “I’ve got coins in my pocket.
One gaffer’s enough, boys, so why would I stop?”

VERSE 4
Rosie O’Connor would roll down her stockings
 and skip to The Pantry to join in the craic. 
Her cronies would serve up the tea and the mocking
where tongues and high-heels could go clickety-clack.
Sunbeams are wanted by Billy and Jesus.
But Billy's the boy who can stump up the pay.
She rises at dawn and lives just as she pleases,
threading her way to the close of each day.
