The dreamy pop of Luxia dealing with today's social media issues gets things going this week, followed by the lush soulful vocal stylings of Only Girl. There's yet another very good track from the BBE catalogue (DJ Vadim and Blackstone) before Warm Digits show the re-incarnated LCD Soundsytem how it should be done! Watch out for the psych rock of Beaches before things wind down with the indie pop/rock sounds of Filthy Friends and the welcome return of Deryn Cullen. I really like Only Girl, but the Warm Digits track was the one that really made me sit up and pay attention when it came on the radio.

DIDI is better known as Hertfordshire producer Lauren Deakin Davies, who at 21 is the youngest full member of the Music Producer’s Guild. Having produced many tracks which have gained Radio 2, 3 and 6 play for the last four years, DIDI has recently launched herself into the fray as a solo act, with a debut single Sorry, which she wrote, recorded and released herself.

Hot on the heels of the debut single, DIDI is releasing Awkward, a punchy passionate anthem. Creatively produced with organic percussion (including cold cups of tea tweaked to resonate in the right key!), DIDI has thrown out the rule book to create something of herself, for herself. Ironically, the searing honesty in the lyrics has inadvertently created a song which resonates for many especially those within the LGBTQ+, disabled and minority groups #endtheawkward. 
Awkward is coming out as an independent release on 28th April.

‘This song was initially written about a situation that seems to happen a lot to me and my friends, especially the female musicians. People seem to have a sense of entitlement over you when you have put yourself ‘out there’, as if you have open the door to ridicule and its ok for them to say it because ‘you have just been on stage so you must have a thick skin’. But it doesn’t work like that, often the criticisms are completely unprovoked and unnecessary and it’s packaged up as constructive criticism, but in reality, it’s just un called for. 
This song gets more specific though, it’s not just about the comments online or people whispering about you, it’s about the bold faced people who think they know better than you and want you know about it, and think they can just dominate all your time and topics or just linger and make you talk. And I’ve realized that the sentiment here may resonate with the often patronizing experiences that many people have told me they have, where people speak for you or think they know best. Which is why I want to associate actively with #endtheawkward. 
This song draws attention to the fact this situation happens in many different guises to many different people, and I think it’s important to bring it out into the open. This song is trying to hit home the subtle issue that still plagues day to day situations, and how to try deal with it.  Ultimately I don’t think the people doing it are aware of how unpleasant their behaviour is, so hopefully this song will make people think before they just hit you with their UNSOLICITED OPINION!

At the turn of the millennium breaks legends Skeewiff had already tasted worldwide success under various musical monikers and their attention turned towards founding their own record label - Jalapeno Records. Primarily as a vehicle to house their new project and to champion like-minded acts producing high quality music they set about getting the house in order and preparing the first few releases...

Fast-forward almost twenty years and the label has evolved to become one of the most respected independents in the UK today, home to a host of talented Funk, Soul, Disco and Electronic artists with a worldwide reputation for quality.

In an age when many independent labels don't make it past their tenth release we feel it's a fitting tribute to an anniversary such as this. Here's to at least another 250 more…

Forming out of a recording project via Scotland and Lancashire, the band first came together in 2015 ‘I played in his band and he played in mine’ composer and singer Emily Scott says of Rob St John. A natural move that saw her similarly recruit Pete Harvey (King Creosote, The Leg) and Joe Smillie (Call To Mind, boss of Glasgow’s Glad Cafe).

Inspired by an antique Victorian harmonium that eventually found its way from Northern Ireland to Scotland, Modern Studies’ debut album ‘Swell To Great’, aptly named after an organ stop, was unusually written with the malfunctioning instrument at the centre of their songwriting.
 
A stimulating approach that melds the old and new through their instruments, delicate harmonies and rich compositions that are steeped in traditional and contemporary folk music. The restrictive process even had their wheezy founding member, the harmonium, controlling the pitch as the intrepid band members tuned their tools accordingly.
 
Recorded in Harvey’s studio, Pumpkinfield in the rural surroundings of Perthshire, the quartet’s songs are embedded in the sea and the landscape of the shoreline.
 
Emily Scott’s tender lead vocals soar over the sweeping cello, bellowing harmonium and gentle percussive crashes on ‘Black Street’, ‘Bottle Green’ and ‘Sleep’, while hidden in its depths Rob St John, whose distinctive vocals recall David Thomas Broughton, experiments with tape loops that are buried within the layers of their orchestral arrangements. St John, known for his field recordings and art-science projects, cites as his guiding inspiration Brian Eno’s experimentalism and pop sensibilities.

Unfurling bucolic stories come with Scott’s lyrics for each song, ‘Supercool’ sets the tone with an immediate sense of yearning, moving into more contemporary folk-pop on ‘Father Is A Craftsman’ and ‘Dive-bombing’ evokes images of summer frolicking on the shore. The record includes an exceptional and haunting ode to Shirley Collins’ rendition of traditional song ‘Bold Fisherman’ that featured on the Earth Recordings ‘Shirley Inspired’ compilation.

A remarkable and timeless debut that rewards repeatedly, ‘Swell To Great’ is released worldwide for the first time on Fire Records.

Just over a year after releasing their lauded debut LP, Yoncalla, Yumi Zouma return with Willowbank, the band’s sophomore album. For the making of Willowbank, Yumi Zouma's members — Charlie Ryder, Josh Burgess, Christie Simpson and Sam Perry — settled on a plan to reunite for the New Zealand summer. To complete what would become their first significant work written and recorded entirely in their home country, they rented a studio in Christchurch’s semi-demolished CBD, on one of the few remaining blocks that still characterizes the city from before it was destroyed by a series of earthquakes. “It was as though there was a brief pause in all of our lives and we finally felt like a band from New Zealand,” said Burgess. “We were on home turf and creating from a place that felt fundamentally natural.” When you know it’s there, the feeling of rootedness is undeniable on Willowbank. Being connected to their origins on the bottom of the earth allowed the band’s members to craft another essential chapter in the Yumi Zouma storybook.
