A year ago today we lost Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I didn’t know Phillip, but I had watched everything he did for 15 years. To me, he was everything one could ever want to be in an artist, and although I am no actor I was much more of a student than a fan. Very soon after his death it became crystal clear to me that I wanted to try very hard and write a song for him. He deserved something from me, something that honored him, and showed how grateful I was for all he had given. His death was immensely sad and as deaths such as these go, leaves us crushed that a life so bright has been dimmed. There is a duality in these circumstances, it’s a place where we find darkness in the light, but more powerfully, we find light in the darkness. I tried to find music that felt the same. It’s my best shot, and it’s called Tranquility.

To a man that showed me, over and over, what excellence and craft is, here is a song for you.

Back in 2012, we released Family Portrait; a four way split between Joanna Gruesome, Playlounge, Keel Her and Gum. The idea was to give four bands with a similar sound and ethic their first vinyl release. We decided it was time for round two and gathered together some of our favourite new bands.

This first track comes from Living Hour, a four piece from Winnipeg Canada. Steady Glazed Eyes is a a slow burning super 8 reel of psychedelic dream pop. All four bands will be on tour throughout April and May and we will be sharing more tracks soon!

Landslide

With his baritone of butter, Jacob Banks could be seen as a successor to any of the 60s and 70s soul greats. But Banks' independently released music carries a different message for a different time. Currently unsigned, the Birmingham singer created his new EP, Paradox, entirely by himself - from mixing and mastering to designing the artwork. "I've put my heart on the line," Banks points out of the 7-track compilation of soul-searching songs that scale resentment and redemption. Taken from Paradox, the foot-stomping, fist-pumping Monster, produced by Show N Prove and Banks, is a passionate recourse aimed at the enemy - both external and within. “This song was born out of a lot anger," says Jacob. "I wrote it in my bathroom  - proper rock and roll! I’m going through life at a very fast pace and I’m learning a lot of things the hard way. One of the things I’ve learnt is that as much as I don’t like it, sometimes you have to become a monster to get what you want and I may well have to become the miracle I’m searching for.”

Kill The Waves found each other through a mutual love of the glitchy rhythms of Caribou and Four Tet, as well as the unashamedly soulful songwriting of Arcade Fire and James Blake. Kill the Waves find joy in combining these two sides of their personalities into new shapes.

In 2014, they finished recording their first album, ‘The One That Could Have Been’ with producer Andy Miller (Mogwai, Life Without Buildings). They were selected to play on the T-Break Stage at one of the UK’s largest festivals,T In The Park, and were named the discovery of the festival by The AU Review. They have also supported the likes of Wild Nothing, Pantha Du Prince and Son Lux.
