When was the last time you listened to an actual ‘mixtape’? You probably think of one of the many mixes inhabiting our digital social spheres, which you might give a quick click or a fast listen. Dutch Drum and Bass connoisseurs Lenzman & Dan Stezo go back in time with the launch of their ‘Soul Tape’, an actual 60 minute cassette tape meant for the discerning Drum and Bass lover.

The Soul Tape is a limited give-away. The hand-crafted package comes in a hard-cover box, with additional T-shirt and a variety of stickers - all with custom artwork by Team Blazin'. Besides that The Soul Tape is a ‘cool’ and fresh (but hyper-traditional) take on the mix-format, it stems from Lenzman and Dan Stezo's 90s ritual of making Hiphop tapes for each other in school.

The Soul Tape exhibits tracks from the world’s finest Drum and Bass artists, blended by Lenzman with Dan Stezo’s narrative slang and distinct voice-over. As a combination they have worked together since 2003, and recently increased their collaborative spirit both on stage and on record. 2014 saw their first release ‘Move & Focus’ together as a combination on the esteemed Metalheadz imprint as part of Lenzman's debut album 'Looking At The Stars.

Lenzman’s tremendous success in his genre and his tour the force around the world doesn't keep him from maintaining a close circle. Long time confidant Team Blazin' adds the artwork in the form of handwritten calligraphy which articulates the Hiphop aesthetics, the three artists’ connecting factor and their shared stylistic background.

The Soul Tape is not for sale, as it is an initiative out of love for the craft, the music and their heritage. The 50 limited edition tapes will be given away to fans over a period of time. As it's holiday season, starting with 10 units via a Facebook “Share to Win” competition. Head over to the Metalheadz Facebook page and you might win a copy of The Soul Tape.

Blindside steps up for Podcast #33. 

Dan has been integral to the UK scene for a hot minute now – schooled on Ratty, Pilgrim, Scotty, Fabio and Bukem at Quest from ‘92, he helped run Pro-Session and Autumn before starting his own event in 2006, Break Thru, and has since joined the SUNANDBASS crew in 2014.

He is also the founder of Blindside Recordings, a label that has been responsible for releasing music from some of drum and bass’ most important producers from the early 2000’s onwards - including the incredible DBridge remix of Dreamworld by Physics, Konspiracy by Marcus Intalex and Noisia’s first release. Blindside Recordings will be making a come back later this year beginning with a release from Calibre, so stay tuned for that!

Amoss - Dispatch Recordings Label Mix - February 2014

The Ulterior Motive duo may have become something of a welcome fixture at FABRICLIVE over the last few years but please, rest assured, that comment is not supposed to come across like we're sat here, resting on their laurels or relying on them time and time again to hold down a peak time dancefloor (the fact that they're repeatedly shown themselves to be adept at exactly that does bear repeating though). It's more their tunes/mixes/sets and general contributions to drum & bass as an entity that we find such a constant winner. Take this 30 minute promo mix, made ahead of the lads' upcoming appearance in Room Two at the annual Playaz Easter Special on Friday 27th March: yes, it's a telltale mixture of stark, rolling rhythms with lashings of testing low end but it's also got oodles of interesting snares, contorted and confusing drum fills, agitated vocal samples, swelling background tones and what one assumes is a VIP mix of DRS' omnipresent 'Count To Ten.' It's overpoweringly obvious that it's been put together by hands that respect and love the music and the platform. 

So, it goes without saying, if your a fan of drum & bass, you should download and enjoy this. Just make sure you don't miss them here at the end of the month.

S.P.Y - Essential Mix @ BBC Radio1 - January 2015

Originally appearing on the Palm Pictures label back in 2000, "The 6ixth Session" was my best selling mix CD. It features Konflict's super awesome "The Messiah" which is one of my favorite drum and bass anthems of all time. The amazing graphic design is by Akira Takahashi and showcases 3D modeling of my head from Rene Garcia aka "Hyperform" who went on to do 3D work for the Matrix and Transformers movies. Suffice it to say, I have always been extremely proud of this particular work. It really helped push drum and bass music to a larger audience in North America.

Music can take you so many places.  I once freestyled with C-Rayz Walz back in 2003 in a dark alley in Baltimore near the Ottobar.  I’ve had the pleasure of emceeing and hosting for inimitable artists like Goldie, Mampi Swift, Aphrodite, Klute, DJ SS, Makoto, Zero T, Fabio, Total Science, Audio, Break, Calyx, Teebee, Pola & Bryson, Flava D, Redeyes, S.P.Y, Ant TC1, Kasra, Mefjus, Halogenix, Bad Company UK, Digital, Matrix & Futurebound, Heist, Command Strange, MC Fava, DJ Rap, Enei, Bladerunner, Robert Manos, Dieselboy, DJ Dara, AK1200, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, The Upbeats, Critical Impact, Sub Zero, Random Movement, Gremlinz, Rene LaVice, Prolix, Loadstar, Brookes Brothers, T.R.A.C, The Prototypes, Sinistarr, Quadrant, Taxman, Teddy Killerz, and so many more. I love the rush that accompanies the feeling of holding the mic, but having no idea of what I am going to say next.  When you are the conduit between the DJ and the crowd, the medium by which expression is felt and shared.  In those moments you are able to influence the crowd + what people may think or feel, the night, and the direction it will follow.  Ultimately, that memory will be yours to keep forever.  I have been freestyling, writing music, and emceeing for over 20 years now with no plans to change.  My goal is to share a piece of who I am every time I perform for those who listen.  I emcee simply because I love it.
