The Stain.....

“Just a Boy” is a haunting indie-blues track by Three Photons, crafted in response to a tragic local event. With raw vocals, analog warmth, and soulful instrumentation—including Jeff Roberts on bass and Andrew Borderick on B3 organ—the song captures the ache of senseless loss and the fragility of youth. Mixed with precision and emotional care, it stands as a sonic memorial: intimate, reflective, and deeply human.

A big thank you to Jeff Roberts and Andrew Borderick for playing on....."Just a Boy".

This sad and devastating local story has been on my mind for a long time.... I'm reminded about this tragedy nearly everyday as I run along the Mississippi Blvd and see the memorial.

I am one year on SC today 30 Oct 21. So I just though I'd put a quick track together, just a fun one with loads of effects on vocals and guitars, even brought back the trigger gate which I used on a lot of earlier songs. Synesthesia is main motif for this song, first because of original lyrics, then as I felt like adding it more flavor with female vocals*, & finally when I recently watched some paintings about this matter**.

The term hoquet is a French word (in Old French also hocquet, hoket, or ocquet) meaning "a shock, sudden interruption, hitch, or hiccup".  Although the term is in reference to the secular music of the 13th and 14th centuries in France, the technique, under other names, could be heard in different types of music across the world as early as the 11th century.  Hoquet is the rhythmic linear technique using the alternation of notes, pitches, or chords.  In medieval practice of hoquet, a single melody is shared between two (or occasionally more) voices or instruments such that alternately one voice sounds while the other rests.  Hoquet is also used in Indonesian Gamelan music, African music, Classical music, Jazz and popular music.
