This is an unusual one for us as we were asked by a friend to do a cover of Alan Jackson’s country song, “Small Town Southern Man” using slightly modified lyrics to personalize it for a family member. Without access to the kind of instruments we would need to replicate Jackson’s recording we opted for something we’ve never done before, a modified karaoke track! With the instrumental track easily secured Nat and I simply added our vocals using the provided modified lyrics. 
Nat added Piano on the track to personalise it.   
The photo cover here shows a glimpse of downtown Shepherd, Michigan and we hope the person for whom it is intended gets a kick out of it. We had some fun doing it. With that said, this track goes out to our friend Larry, with Super Bowl/Valentine’s week best wishes to all our friends out there in music land! 🍻🏈💝

Small Town Shepherd Man

The Last Time

This song started as an idea David and I came up with to do an afrobeat song together.  So David came up with this banger of a bass line and drums track and sent it to me. I added some guitars, electric piano, and organ. I then excitedly sent it to Mikey to add the sax, which I consider to be a key element of afrobeat music, and which he always does so well. David's version is much more drum and bass heavy. Please have a listen to both so you can hear how they both sound. I really had a good time making this song. David produced and mixed both versions, and what a fun thing it is to hear my instruments integrated into an elrctronica song by such able hands.

Having now truly got the Dr Feelgood drug in my system I felt the need to do another version of Back in the Night. This time I wanted to play my new telecaster and why not do Lee’s slide in the correct tuning this time? (Open E if you're interested). Oh, and while I'm at it, how about an improv harp solo or two. Ha ha. I'm going for the live Wilko-on-speed vibe here. Oh, I do hope he likes it!

I’ll finish with some words from Wilko Johnson himself from an interview with Songwriting Magazine:

“I remember when I wrote Back In The Night – I sat up all night writing that fucker – and I was so chuffed with it, and I went to the rehearsal the next day and played it to them and they just sneered at it. Well, they didn’t sneer. They just went, ‘Oh, it’s alright’. You know, ‘You bastards, it’s really good!”

I agree Wilko. It IS really good!

Today’s latest posting in my Dr Feelgood project is a song called “Take a Tip”. Whilst I’ve been focussing predominantly so far on a selection of the Wilko Johnson era tunes, it is time to wander into Gypie Mayo territory. Gypie replaced Wilko in 1977 and boy did he have some big cuban heels to fill! Everyone (except for Lee Brilleaux it would seem) was wondering how on earth he was going to cope with the high bar that Wilko had set. Actually, in the end, Gypie made it look easy. He took to the stage with his trademark sneer, churning out songs that would bring Dr Feelgood even greater chart success. Gypie brought a rockier edge to the music which divided many dyed-in-the-wool fans, but which opened the doors to a new audience.

Sadly, 4 years of constant touring finally took its toll and Mayo himself called it a day. What a legacy he leaves behind! In my opinion I think Gypie’s real genius lay in his ability to hold true to the vision the band had first set out with on their quest to create uncomplicated cut-back music. This was a band whose first instincts were to record live in mono, a single take, straight down to a single track if they could only get away with it! “Take a Tip” is perhaps one of the least well known of his songs, but I think it’s a real hidden gem and up there in my favourites! I heard it first as a b-side to the “Down at the Doctors” single. My version has shades of Motorhead, but really I’m playing the guitar more like Mick Green might have rather than Gypie Mayo. My rendition stays fairly true to the live version the band would perform, with the addition of a murdered harp solo being the main deviation from the original. I'm trying for a live, blow-the-roof-off, volume at 11, runaway train version. Let me know if I succeeded!

This tune is a shameless rip of Kiwi band Brilleaux's brilliant cover of Dr Feelgood's wonderful cover of Eddie Fontaine's "Nothin' Shakin' (But the Leaves on the Trees)". Whilst I love the music, I wanted new lyrics, so that's what I did here, transporting us back to the the North of England sometime in the mid-70s. As with the other covers, I'm striving for the live explosive style that is Dr Feelgood at their very best.

I did say I'd not do another Dr Feelgood number for a while, but as you can see here, I'm breaking my promise. Today I offer a ham-fisted rendition of Dr Feelgood's first hit single and the only one that featured Wilko Johnson: Sneakin' Suspicion. I've just dug out my old vinyls and I actually have this single. It was issued in 1977 under United Artists Records. At the time I bought this(which was a good few years later), my favourite song on the single was actually "Lights Outs" which I would go on to play with The Blisters. Anyhoo... This version is a little closer to the one performed by Wilko and Norman Watt Roy years later. Given my renewed love of harmonica and my desperate attempts to learn it, you get a couple of harp solos instead of Wilko's guitar riffs into the bargain. Now, if only I could find my 12" promo of "She's a windup"...
