So to say thank you for everyone who’s been listening for the last 100,000 plays I’m uploading a truly epic ‘lost’ track, GusGus ‘David (King Unique Remix)’ from 2003. The story behind why it didn’t come out is probably best forgotten, but the dispute had absolutely nothing to do with GusGus themselves. Don’t want to start any rumours ;)

As Soundcloud is particularly about letting you hear exclusive & unreleased stuff I’m uploading three versions – the final one and a couple of earlier work-in-progress versions. We couldn’t decide on the best drop so we made two; then we still couldn’t decide so we ended up mixing them together – anyway, for those who are interested here are both the work-in-progress versions, exactly as we bounced them off at the end of the studio day 8 years ago.

Obviously it sounds rather dated now, long after electro-house & glitchy techno have made all these sounds very common so enjoy it as a little slice of history :)

P.S. I would love to offer this as a free download but as a remix the song rights still belong with GusGus - so maybe go & nag them? :)

The mysterious Han Haak lands at Sudbeats doors. His previous work has seem him grace Selador, Sound Avenue and We Are Here Music, and now with 'Redemption' he joins the Sudbeat family. We don’t know anything else about Mr Haak, so we'll just move on to the music and let that do the talking.

‘Redemption', much like Han, is deep and mysterious. Its hypnotic soundscape really draws you in, as its chime like pattern creates tension, while the bass paves the way as this dance floor gem unfurls its magic. After the drop the energy levels increase as extra layers are add deliver a surge in its already driving demeanour. Big stuff!

The always consistent King Unique take on the remix duties, and were certainly wearing the techno trousers on this occasion, as this dark rework packs a serious punch. Trippy fx on the beats make things wobbly from the off, as we moodily march forward, before those bells shroud us further into its enigmatic vibe. Add some live drums, some doppler style effects to the beats to add to this narcotised workout.

Rounding things off nicely we have ‘Damnation'. Shoulder swaying groovy techieness oozes out of every pore here, as nice little reversed blips line the track, as the descending moody patterns gently cascade before all of the layers merge wonderfully in to a solid mass of goodness.

Killdeer's singing style is rooted in blues, she's a storyteller. Listening to PHOEBE KILLDEER & THE SHORT STRAWS you might hear hints of Noise Rock, pounding inventive drumming, white noise, feedback, David Lynch’s disturbing climatic atmosphere, The Bad Seeds, Beasts of Bourbon and The Birthday Party. The sound is a perfect clash of raw, edgy, dirty blues with hints of industrial noise, reverb guitar, Yma Sumac’s Exotica and 60's Southern Soul.  Expect everything.

Berlin-based, Australian singer/songwriter Phoebe Killdeer, lead vocalist of PHOEBE KILLDEER & THE SHORT STRAWS, first gained attention in 2004 when she lent her powerful vocals to '80s pop ballads and reprises of new wave classics for the group NOUVELLE VAGUE. She was featured as a vocalist on several tracks on the second Nouvelle Vague album, Bande à Part, and toured widely with the group. Prior to that Killdeer offered up her singing skills to several prominent electronic artists, including Zero dB for their track "Sunshine Lazy" and Basement Jaxx, with whom she performed the song "Tonight" for their Kish Kash album.

Phoebe Killdeer’s collaboration with Nouvelle Vague continues, mainman Marc Collin providing his production skills on early recordings and releasing her new album, ‘INNERQUAKE’, on his Kwaidan record label. Produced by Matt Verta Ray (Heavy Trash), ‘INNERQUAKE’ was recorded after two years of PHOEBE KILLDEER & THE SHORT STRAWS live shows, they travelled the world honing their powerful sound and undeniable energy, Phoebe’s distinctive vocals and a killer live show have transfixed audiences across the globe.

A bass music icon from the days of his Platinum-selling UK garage anthem I Don't Smoke Da Reefer, Deekline recently released (with Ed Solo) new album Bounce 'n' Shake, a tour de force of booty bass, jungle, soul, breaks, dubstep, drumstep and drum 'n' bass sent down with the kind of assurance one might expect from a DJ who has sent bodies flying round the room at club venues across the globe for more than a decade. Expect brazen and bombastic badboy anthems accompanied by skilled, selective scratch techniques capable of hyping up even the most taciturn of crowds from an artist who recently proved his hipster credentials with remixes for the likes of Lethal Bizzle and Laidback Luke.

Joining Deekline on stage will be partner in crime Ed Solo, an expert studio guru whose sublime engineering skills are equalled only by his nack for a booty-bouncing hook and an ability to throw down on the turntables. When it comes to pouring on the bass frequencies, Ed's skills are unrivalled, whether the tune in question be a killer dubstep cut, an upfront slice of drum 'n' bass, a booming booty house number or a funky, electro-fuelled breaks 12". Our final Hot Cakes Live decknician is two-time UK DMC champ JFC, who will be slipping his unique brand of turntable exhibitionism into the mix. Described by no less than Fatboy Slim as "The Thinking Man's Grandmaster Flash", this Brighton-based DJ and producer is a scratch daddy for the bass music generation, an artist who is as likely to beat juggle dubstep rollers as he is to throw down live remixes of classic hip-shaking 12"s (check out his barmy take on DJ Shadow's Midnight in a Perfect World or infamous four-turntable reworking of Fatboy Slim's Right Here Right Now on YouTube for a taste of what to expect). With releases on iconic labels such as Hospital records, Rat Records, Skint Records, Hot Cakes and GhettoFunk, JFB has DJed all over the world from LoveBox and Glastonbury to Canada's iconic Shambhala and Bestival's Big Top Stage, where he's a huge favourite. King Unique is Matt Thomas, an all round studio junkie and dj with a taste for tripped-out cosmic techno and rough-edged underground house; in a career spanning nearly a decade KU’s distinctive sound has won an enviable global following. A ceaseless schedule of dj sets and festival gigs backed up by relentless studio sessions resulting in scores of records, remixes and radio broadcasts has made the KU sound an instantly recognizable part of the music-life of millions of the world’s clubbers - and a fixture in the vinyl crates, cd wallets and laptops of the world’s most influential djs. Consistently appealing across genres the tracks have been played by everyone from John Digweed to Soulwax, Richie Hawtin to Tiesto, and have turned up everywhere from Hollywood soundtracks to mobile ringtones - not to mention countless compilations and mix albums.  

Formed in 2001 by Matt Thomas & Matthew Roberts, King Unique hit the floor running, claiming the title of Undisputed Remix Champs by scoring five Essential New Tunes in five months on Pete Tong's "Essential Selection" Radio 1 show. A US Billboard Dance Chart number 1 for the remix of Dirty Vegas’ “Walk Into The Sun”, plus two more solo Essential New Tunes for Matt under his Watkins and Mainframe alter-egos saw KU firmly cement their place amongst the ranks of first-call remixers. The King Unique production touch has been in constant demand since, appearing on more than sixty remixes and yielding some of the biggest dance floor bombs known to man - Underworld's "Two Months Off", The Killers "Somebody Told Me", Planet Funk’s “The Switch”, John Dahlback's "Late Night Worries", and Tracey Thorn’s "Grand Canyon". 

2006 saw the end of the original duo’s studio partnership, as Matt Thomas took on the King Unique role as a solo artist. The four years since have seen the KU sound rise to new heights with a mixture of euphoric acidic melodies, dark brooding techno vibes and old skool beats. This new 'cosmic techno' has found it's home on John Digweed's Bedrock label with the release of "2000000 Suns" and the KU / Anthony Pappa collaboration “Vamoosh”. Backing up the new material have been remixes of John Digweed’s “Bilder”, Hernan Cattaneo’s “Teleport”, Fergie’s “PCP” and an on-going association with James Lavelle’s UNKLE project that has so far resulted in five stunning re-workings; “Heaven”, "Heavy Drug", “The Answer”, “Reign feat. Ian Brown” & “Rabbit In Your Headlights feat. Thom Yorke” - all adding up to reaffirm Matt's status as one of the most versatile and consistent producers of the last ten years.

The renowned King Unique dj set has made KU a regular addition to the line up of some of the world's most respected clubs and biggest festivals, playing everywhere from ultra-hip blacked-out sweat boxes in Tokyo to euphoric crowds of thousands on the tropical beaches of Madeira. An increasingly hectic international schedule has seen Matt racking up enough air-miles for a free trip to the moon, with gigs in Sydney, Panama, Budapest, Seoul, Helsinki, Mexico City, Dubai, Rosario, Bogota, Kazantip, Vilnius - just to name a handful. Since the very first shows Matt has pushed at the cutting edge of the technology revolution that's swept through club culture, taking laptops, new gadgets and studio gear into the booth. 2010 saw the addition of the near mythic Monome controller to the sonic armoury - part track-mangling Ableton controller and part psychedelic light show, lovingly hand built by techno-hippies in the Catskill Mountains.
