i've done something special for this mix, two hours of King Unique tracks & remixes picked out from fourteen years & ninety releases. i've had a lot of fun pulling out old boxes of vinyl, DAT tapes & CD backups, (not to mention encountering some dodgy old press shots along the way) & even found a couple of unreleased gems from ten years back - original dubs of 'Sugarhigh' & Underworld's 'Two Months Off' anybody?

i've tried to include a little of everything, from early house days on Defected to dark tribal on Junior Boys Own & the melodic techno of Bedrock - plus the remixes for pretty much every major & indie label under the sun. it would've taken four or five hours just to include everyone's favourites in a 'definitive' mix so this is simply how KU looked to me in one week of looking back in 2013. if i missed out your essential KU i'll maybe do this again one day; & of course there's still all those bootlegs lying around doing nothing...

it goes without saying that this mix is as much about my original partner in KU Matthew Roberts as it is about me. we sat in the studio together 5 days a week 8 or 9 hours a day between 1999 & 2006 making this stuff - then scurried home to see our families briefly before heading off to the airport or motorway for the weekend.

and why Westway? because that was the flyover at the end of the 4 hour drive to London - you hit it & left the stop-starting suburb traffic behind you and zoomed in over the rooftops, past the Junior Boy's Own offices (launch pad for Dirty, Sugarhigh & dozens of remixes), right by our DJ agency's window & straight into the deserted financial heart of the city. dive into the hotel, lightning shower then back out & walk up the street through crowds of fucked up people, past the end of the fabriclondon queue, round the corner & down the steps into Turnmills. the sights! The 33rd release on microCastle features the return of Matt Thomas aka King Unique to the label. The storied UK producer has been an integral part of microCastle over the course of the labels 5 year existence. This is Matt's fourth appearance and it follows his much hyped remix of Jamie Stevens 'The Wonder Of You' from November of 2013. It's been a huge year thus far for King Unique with an appearance on Bedrock's 'Underground Sound of Miami' collection and the release of 'Yohkoh 2014' on Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. We're pleased to welcome Matt back to microCastle for his first EP entitled 'Some Break The Shell'. The EPs unique title taken from Molly Drake's poem 'The Shell' is in reference to Matt breaking away from the musical ground which many have come to expect from him.

The melodic house production Raydrop (7 Hours feat. Natalie Arnold) leads the EP off in fine fashion. King Unique's big beats, chunky grooves and quirky electronics lay down a contemporary vibe early on. The spacious foundation then gets well complemented with hypnotic keys, hazy sheets of harmony and Natalie's pristine vocals which cut through the atmosphere with a dynamic flair. This tastefully restrained epic has already earned praise from Above & Beyond, Hernan Cattaneo and Henry Saiz so expect to be hearing this one a lot in the coming months! A dub of 'Raydrop' has also been included which features the same great musical themes from '7 Hours' presented in a slightly more subtle fashion which should serve the less vocally inclined DJs perfectly.

The EPs third selection 'Some Break' sees King Unique exploring an ultramodern melodic sound. The undeniable bounce of the breakbeat rhythms are not only fresh but are sure to be magic on the dancefloor. The melodic content of the track is continually building as emotive vocal elements and poignant harmonies play off each other for what results in the ultimate sun drenched anthem. The EP's final track 'Without Boxes' is in many ways it's most exquisite piece. The delicate textures are full of wonderful character and the unique progression of the production carries a profoundly emotional message. It's a piece of music that will sit with you for quite some time and it puts a perfect close to what is one of King Unique's most eagerly anticipated EPs of his career.

Lonya & Mz Sunday Luv - Judgement Day (King Unique Remix) OUT NOW

The mysterious Han Haak lands at Sudbeats doors. His previous work has seem him grace Selador, Sound Avenue and We Are Here Music, and now with 'Redemption' he joins the Sudbeat family. We don’t know anything else about Mr Haak, so we'll just move on to the music and let that do the talking.

‘Redemption', much like Han, is deep and mysterious. Its hypnotic soundscape really draws you in, as its chime like pattern creates tension, while the bass paves the way as this dance floor gem unfurls its magic. After the drop the energy levels increase as extra layers are add deliver a surge in its already driving demeanour. Big stuff!

The always consistent King Unique take on the remix duties, and were certainly wearing the techno trousers on this occasion, as this dark rework packs a serious punch. Trippy fx on the beats make things wobbly from the off, as we moodily march forward, before those bells shroud us further into its enigmatic vibe. Add some live drums, some doppler style effects to the beats to add to this narcotised workout.

Rounding things off nicely we have ‘Damnation'. Shoulder swaying groovy techieness oozes out of every pore here, as nice little reversed blips line the track, as the descending moody patterns gently cascade before all of the layers merge wonderfully in to a solid mass of goodness.

Having enjoyed an outstanding year, Alesso certainly isn’t resting on his laurels as it starts to draw to a close. King Unique is Matt Thomas, an all round studio junkie and dj with a taste for tripped-out cosmic techno and rough-edged underground house; in a career spanning nearly a decade KU’s distinctive sound has won an enviable global following. A ceaseless schedule of dj sets and festival gigs backed up by relentless studio sessions resulting in scores of records, remixes and radio broadcasts has made the KU sound an instantly recognizable part of the music-life of millions of the world’s clubbers - and a fixture in the vinyl crates, cd wallets and laptops of the world’s most influential djs. Consistently appealing across genres the tracks have been played by everyone from John Digweed to Soulwax, Richie Hawtin to Tiesto, and have turned up everywhere from Hollywood soundtracks to mobile ringtones - not to mention countless compilations and mix albums.  

Formed in 2001 by Matt Thomas & Matthew Roberts, King Unique hit the floor running, claiming the title of Undisputed Remix Champs by scoring five Essential New Tunes in five months on Pete Tong's "Essential Selection" Radio 1 show. A US Billboard Dance Chart number 1 for the remix of Dirty Vegas’ “Walk Into The Sun”, plus two more solo Essential New Tunes for Matt under his Watkins and Mainframe alter-egos saw KU firmly cement their place amongst the ranks of first-call remixers. The King Unique production touch has been in constant demand since, appearing on more than sixty remixes and yielding some of the biggest dance floor bombs known to man - Underworld's "Two Months Off", The Killers "Somebody Told Me", Planet Funk’s “The Switch”, John Dahlback's "Late Night Worries", and Tracey Thorn’s "Grand Canyon". 

2006 saw the end of the original duo’s studio partnership, as Matt Thomas took on the King Unique role as a solo artist. The four years since have seen the KU sound rise to new heights with a mixture of euphoric acidic melodies, dark brooding techno vibes and old skool beats. This new 'cosmic techno' has found it's home on John Digweed's Bedrock label with the release of "2000000 Suns" and the KU / Anthony Pappa collaboration “Vamoosh”. Backing up the new material have been remixes of John Digweed’s “Bilder”, Hernan Cattaneo’s “Teleport”, Fergie’s “PCP” and an on-going association with James Lavelle’s UNKLE project that has so far resulted in five stunning re-workings; “Heaven”, "Heavy Drug", “The Answer”, “Reign feat. Ian Brown” & “Rabbit In Your Headlights feat. Thom Yorke” - all adding up to reaffirm Matt's status as one of the most versatile and consistent producers of the last ten years.

The renowned King Unique dj set has made KU a regular addition to the line up of some of the world's most respected clubs and biggest festivals, playing everywhere from ultra-hip blacked-out sweat boxes in Tokyo to euphoric crowds of thousands on the tropical beaches of Madeira. An increasingly hectic international schedule has seen Matt racking up enough air-miles for a free trip to the moon, with gigs in Sydney, Panama, Budapest, Seoul, Helsinki, Mexico City, Dubai, Rosario, Bogota, Kazantip, Vilnius - just to name a handful. Since the very first shows Matt has pushed at the cutting edge of the technology revolution that's swept through club culture, taking laptops, new gadgets and studio gear into the booth. 2010 saw the addition of the near mythic Monome controller to the sonic armoury - part track-mangling Ableton controller and part psychedelic light show, lovingly hand built by techno-hippies in the Catskill Mountains.
