King Unique is Matt Thomas, an all round studio junkie and dj with a taste for tripped-out cosmic techno and rough-edged underground house; in a career spanning nearly a decade KU’s distinctive sound has won an enviable global following. A ceaseless schedule of dj sets and festival gigs backed up by relentless studio sessions resulting in scores of records, remixes and radio broadcasts has made the KU sound an instantly recognizable part of the music-life of millions of the world’s clubbers - and a fixture in the vinyl crates, cd wallets and laptops of the world’s most influential djs. Consistently appealing across genres the tracks have been played by everyone from John Digweed to Soulwax, Richie Hawtin to Tiesto, and have turned up everywhere from Hollywood soundtracks to mobile ringtones - not to mention countless compilations and mix albums. 

Formed in 2001 by Matt Thomas & Matthew Roberts, King Unique hit the floor running, claiming the title of Undisputed Remix Champs by scoring five Essential New Tunes in five months on Pete Tong's "Essential Selection" Radio 1 show. A US Billboard Dance Chart number 1 for the remix of Dirty Vegas’ “Walk Into The Sun”, plus two more solo Essential New Tunes for Matt under his Watkins and Mainframe alter-egos saw KU firmly cement their place amongst the ranks of first-call remixers. The King Unique production touch has been in constant demand since, appearing on more than sixty remixes and yielding some of the biggest dance floor bombs known to man - Underworld's "Two Months Off", The Killers "Somebody Told Me", Planet Funk’s “The Switch”, John Dahlback's "Late Night Worries", and Tracey Thorn’s "Grand Canyon". 

2006 saw the end of the original duo’s studio partnership, as Matt Thomas took on the King Unique role as a solo artist. The four years since have seen the KU sound rise to new heights with a mixture of euphoric acidic melodies, dark brooding techno vibes and old skool beats. This new 'cosmic techno' has found it's home on John Digweed's Bedrock label with the release of "2000000 Suns" and the KU / Anthony Pappa collaboration “Vamoosh”. Backing up the new material have been remixes of John Digweed’s “Bilder”, Hernan Cattaneo’s “Teleport”, Fergie’s “PCP” and an on-going association with James Lavelle’s UNKLE project that has so far resulted in five stunning re-workings; “Heaven”, "Heavy Drug", “The Answer”, “Reign feat. Ian Brown” & “Rabbit In Your Headlights feat. Thom Yorke” - all adding up to reaffirm Matt's status as one of the most versatile and consistent producers of the last ten years.

The renowned King Unique dj set has made KU a regular addition to the line up of some of the world's most respected clubs and biggest festivals, playing everywhere from ultra-hip blacked-out sweat boxes in Tokyo to euphoric crowds of thousands on the tropical beaches of Madeira. An increasingly hectic international schedule has seen Matt racking up enough air-miles for a free trip to the moon, with gigs in Sydney, Panama, Budapest, Seoul, Helsinki, Mexico City, Dubai, Rosario, Bogota, Kazantip, Vilnius - just to name a handful. Since the very first shows Matt has pushed at the cutting edge of the technology revolution that's swept through club culture, taking laptops, new gadgets and studio gear into the booth. 2010 saw the addition of the near mythic Monome controller to the sonic armoury - part track-mangling Ableton controller and part psychedelic light show, lovingly hand built by techno-hippies in the Catskill Mountains.

100% made with sounds dialled into a super rare 1977 Lord Synthesisers Skywave monosyth during revival and major repairs by D.A.Wilson at Hideaway Studio.  Believed to be only one of ten ever built it is clear this curious instrument was designed from the outset as a performance instrument boasting several unusual features such as a three-axis joystick modulating the pitch/filter/VCA/LFO and Sample-Hold features as well as featuring Low and Band-Pass filters along with a built-in Ring Modulator and Phaser.  It all takes some getting used to but there is a lot of sonic territory to explore with this unusual beast.  

I decided to call this piece Desert Awakening as I've often felt like I've been alone in the desert whilst reviving this beast thanks to an apparent total lack of any technical information out there!

Here at Data Transmission we've always been a little hesitant when it comes to mash-ups; too many rappers dropped over classic rock or synth pop has left us mentally scarred. Step forward Chester's King Unique, with a bootleg remix combining three top dogs of contemporary dance; we think we've just been converted!

Combining Napoleon's 'Heart Of Night', Dave Seaman's 'Justified Replacement Of Lulu (Joeski Remix)' and 'Kiss Me Again' by Bakradze, Unique weaves a tech house groover with a tropical twist.

The tracks are taken from Unique's new 25-track Beyond Borders: London compilation for Armada, which includes a full 77-minute mix. Said to blend "old school drum ‘n’ bass and speed garage soundsets with the bump and groove of melodic house" the album is the first in a new mix series; Unique explains the concept via press release: "There’s no preconception; there are no expectations placed on the artist stylistically, the mix is literally 'without borders'. The only anchor is that it be tied to a place, and even how literally that is taken is up for grabs."

Kicking things off Unique wanted to explore the"musical mutation and graffiti scrawled grooves" of London. “I’m now mining the weirder techy end of the underground, in a scene where the ‘90s heritage is as relevant as when I started. I’m a ‘90s house coelacanth, an actual ‘90s producer that the kids can gawp at and prod with sticks,” he jests. "There are some bits of music on here that I adore more than my children.”

It has been sitting about on the hard drive since, and I thought it's the perfect weather for this to be a free give away leading up to my follow up EP on Born Electric.

chatting with a friend online today about classic 1970/80s Eno ambient albums & particularly Apollo, the 'For All Mankind' soundtrack. i'd read an interview sometime ago with Brian Eno about the recording of these tracks, which revealed that many of them were originally simple piano pieces in a classical style (minuets, tangoes etc) which his brother Roger had written. the timing of these pieces was then dramatically altered, the parts replayed with synthesizers at various pitches and sounds and the whole lot beautifully mixed by Daniel Lanois.

having explained it all i thought it might be interesting to try it so i dug out one of Roger Eno's own simple piano compositions "Between Tides", and spent ten minutes treating the whole track with the same sort of simple system - huge tempo reduction, three copies replaying at altered pitches, and the whole lot put through some pretty heavy granular synthesis processing. then i bounced it off without even playing it through, just trusting to the same system that created some of the best ambient music ever made.

i think the result's not bad for ten minutes; not a fully realized piece but a great example of how effective system music can be - just set a few rules up and feed your ideas in. clever chaps those Enos...

Known to his chums as The Passenger started dj'ing in 93, on a strict diet of UK Rave and then Drum n Bass, Jungle.

He played on London pirate stations Origin and Hype FM and has since spread his unique love from Sankeys, Manchester, Elektrowerkz, London, to Ministry of Sound, Ibiza. 

He now devours genres like girls chomp crisps. Techno, House, Dub Step, Acid, Breakbeat, Fidget, Grime, DIrt n Dust!
