It’s no secret that Detroit is the home of techno and one of the top breeding grounds for some of the best electronic music in the world. Coming out of that Detroit music subculture, is one of the city’s protege House DJs, Shawn Michaels . When he gets in the room, he triggers dance floors and instigates sweaty dance scenes in clubs and parties alike, knowing what makes clubbers beg for more. Ultimately, he knows that the mechanics of the dance floor revolve around just one thing, exceptionally great music.
Drawing from the inspiration of local support, along with musical influences such as Hot Since 82, Steve Lawler, Jaime Jones, and Peace Division, Shawn is well known for his wide range of electronic music and regularly plays extended sets. His unique sound has earned him respect amongst his contemporaries and has annihilated inhibitions of clubbers and house music lovers alike, while remaining true with his musical vision intact.
Shawn’s distinctive sound has reached all corners of Detroit City and beyond, while holding residencies in nearly every club in Michigan. He has performed countless sets at Bleu, Times Square, and Grasshopper UnderGround, including Elektricity and The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, all the way to The Necto in Ann Arbor, all while showing up to perform late night sets at several of Detroit’s premiere After Hours venues. Shawn has also supported many of the world's most elite and notable electronic music acts including, Sasha & Digweed, Deep Dish, Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg, Josh Wink, Nic Fanciulli, Erick Morillo, Paolo Mojo, Green Velvet, and Junkie XL. In addition to his role as one of Detroit's premier opening acts, Michaels has headlined gigs stretching from Canada down to Miami, out to Phoenix and back.
Signed to Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto Records in 2009, Thieves has played numerous Perfecto parties and has jumped into producing for the label as well. Working along side long time friend and mentor Kenneth Thomas, he released his Beatport tech house chart topper, Funktion Won on Perfecto Black, as well as his most notable house stomper, State Of The Union, featuring vocals by DJ Roland Clark and co-written by one of his dearest friends, the late Steve Radosavich.
The first decade of this new millennium has held many great things for Michaels and fans of electronic music alike, including his hard earned realization and vision for global status, and a “fresh start,” in his own words. It’s safe to say that listeners and clubbers should be on the lookout for much more from him this year and beyond, as he continues to bring solid productions and quality dance music to speakers and dance floors near you.
