Sly & Robbie Meets Dubmatix - Smoothie ft Prince Alla, Screechy Dan, Megative

Even though he enjoyed strong feedback to his Sweet Personality rhythm five years ago, producer Garfield Cowan believed he could improve on some of the songs featured on it. Those, and more, can be heard on Reggae Hits Vol 1, released last Friday by his Nature's Way Entertainment label.

There are new songs on the album including "Free Up The Grades" by King Mas and Jemere Morgan, and Mdees' I Can't Breathe. Boston-born King Mas is the son of Montserrat Calypsonian Supreme and his Jamaican wife, while Morgan is son of Morgan Heritage member Gramps.

According to Cowan, he has deliberately worked with mainly singers since the onset of Nature's Way.

“The reason is that I tend to see and hear the singers. Their songs are timeless and are loved by more reggae fans,” he said.

Nearly a century ago, in the year 1920, the honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey prophesied:

“Look to the East for the crowning of a Black King, he is the Redeemer for the days of deliverance are near.” 
 
In the spirit of the great ancestor, an army of Roots Reggae soldiers have organized and centralized in a musical tribute to our forefathers (and mothers) who have paved the way for Rastafari culture and Afrikan liberation theology as I & I carry the torch into the new millennium.

The "To Di East" Riddim, available on all digital music platforms as of April 6th, is the brainchild of the Jah-N-I Roots Movement in collaboration with the Bantu Nation Movement. Both collectives operate out of Boston, Massachusetts with seasoned musicians, Jahriffe & King MAS respectively, as the spearheads of each production team. The musicians responsible for this instrumental, infused with a celestial tone and vibration, are one of Boston's top musical ensembles known as Circadian Riddims. Many recognize the potency of the "American Reggae" music coming out of Hawaii and California, but this heavy one-drop Reggae release will give you a reason to look "To Di East".

In the opening number, Jahriffe teams up with Jamaican Reggae veteran Warrior King. Drawing upon the often quoted biblical verse "in my father's house are many mansions," the warriors cry out for "tolerance" and unity in these times of division and strife amongst nations.

The dub heavy sound of the project is due to the masterful mix provided by the skilled hands of Wadadah II of the D.O.V.E. Muzik recording label out of Chicago, Illinois. Emerging from this powerful musical camp, founded by Tzaddi Wadadah I circa 1983, 2 vital messengers are featured on this project by the names Kazayah & Ras I-Dre.

Kazayah sets the tone early on with her "mission" statement urging one and all to put aside "petty prejudices" and "come together" with a tone and delivery both hypnotic and captivating. 

Ras I-Dre, a young fierce lyricist from Jamaica, then invokes the entire pantheon of Roots Reggae legends (past and present) in a tune paying homage to all who have maintained the vitality and integrity of this "Sweet Reggae" music throughout the years featuring vocal harmonies from Kazayah.

As usual, King MAS reaches into the ancestral realm as the "musical Obia man" and highlights one of the founding fathers of the Ashanti kingdom by the name Okomfo Anokye. "Can't Draw We Out" brings light to the sword that Anokye drove into the ground during his time as an Ashanti high priest in the 17th century. Anokye stated that "if anyone removes the sword, that marks the end of the Ashanti kingdom." The legendary sword, which remains unmoved & can still be seen in Kumasi today, inspired this musical tribute expressing solidarity between the people of Ghana and the children of the bloodline carried into the diaspora.

Finally, Jahriffe reveals more musical Mdu Ntr as he encourages one and all to "be who you come to be" and recognize your own divinity. "God Body" is followed by the "Spiritual Ancestor" dub mix by Wadadah II which any Roots Reggae practitioner would do well to add to their collection. As we move through the vernal equinox, the light of the sun rising from the east has overtaken the darkness enveloping the planet during the winter months. Just like the ever increasing power of the sun, look out for more heat from these Reggae warriors and light bearers ‘trodding’ from the east and chanting "To Di East".

VP Records is proud to announce the signing of London based artist and producer Culan (real name Luke Grayson). Culan came to the attention of A&R man Richard "Shams" Browne in the process of compiling the VP Records compilation Strictly The Best Vol. 57, the song "Easy To Love You" had already scored 1 million streams on Spotify, but was not known in reggae dancehall circles. Beside this, Culan's revision of the Ed Sheeran hit “Shape of You” had garnered 7.3 million views on Facebook and great numbers YouTube in just a few weeks and a new single "Merengue" was also gaining support from the artists Facebook following (now at 66k).

With all the right ingredients; seductive riddim, flirty lyrics, Culan’s raspy vocals and Konshens gritty panache, the single “Easy To Love You” remix is shaping up to be a notable Summer 2018 jam. "I liked 'Easy To Love You' right away" said VP Records President Randy Chin, "the more I researched Culan, the more I thought he could be a great addition to the VP roster. The U.K. music scene is exploding internationally and I can see Culan hitting in the U.K. and with our 'core' reggae audience."   

“Over the following months, the label collaborated with Team Culan (Managers Chris Hunte and Fabiane Liscott) in order to prepare for the next step, a remix of “Easy to Love You” featuring dancehall star Konshens. The song will be released June 1st as the lead track (and instant-grat) from Reggae Gold 2018 - 25th Anniversary Edition. The music video for "Easy To Love You Remix" is scheduled for June.

Paul Dickow AKA Strategy is a musical polymath with a signature sound derived from his immersion in hardware-based electronic music.  He has spent close to two decades traveling freely through house, techno, rave, noise, ambient, and sounds more difficult to categorize. "I set out to make a full set of dub tracks good enough to make an album -- something that had always eluded me-- and it worked, finally. A simple exercise in seeing if we could launch the capsule to orbit Planet Reggae and make it home again.”  

Reaching Planet Reggae, the album explores analog caverns of dubwise at all tempos, from the 80s to 140, full of the ghosts of ancient and future technologies, glimmering shards of hope among heaps of folly, ruin and rubble.  Music fans with crates deeper than the contemporary will find shades of Wackies, Firehouse, Unity Sound, Burial Mix and more, but only winks and nods… no one sounds like Strategy, and Strategy sounds like no one.

Grammy award-winning songwriter, vocalist & guitarist King Mas is a musical amalgamation of culture and art. A voice that reverberates thought-provoking messages, King Mas is a trailblazer for the conscious reggae fusion movement. Dubbed the “Musical Obeah Man”, The King has inherited an ancestral music tradition that spans generations. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, King Mas was born to culturally grounded Caribbean parents. His father Supreme, is a legendary calypso monarch from the island of Montserrat, and his mother a Clarendon born Jamaican who grew up during the formative years of reggae music. This is not to mention, an immensely talented lineage that is comprised of musicians and songwriters including Everton “Reality” Weeks, who wrote the world-renowned calypso hit “Hot, Hot, Hot”.

With a strong passion for music, King Mas drew inspiration from isolation as an epilepsy survivor. Facing the reality of a potentially life ending condition, King Mas would find solace in song. With Walkman in hand, he would tune into the arrangements of his favorite artists and impersonate their musical style and delivery. From Buju to Busta, to Beres and, Brian McKnight, The King immersed himself in varied types of music. It was this experience that shaped his existence as an exceptional artiste with an international following. 

King Mas acknowledges his divine purpose for living, also known as Nkrabea. Drawing from African spirituality, The King crafts distinctive words and sound to release life-altering energy, aiding mankind in realizing itself. With songs like, “Walk Like A Champion” and “Reflection”, King Mas chooses to heal rather than simply entertain. It is through this calling that he has earned the moniker “Musical Obeah Man”, paying homage to his Afro-Caribbean roots. 

To date, King Mas has performed all over the United States and the four corners of the world. From Lebanon to Lintz, to the Limpopo River, The King has electrified audiences with his unique vocal style, often delivering encore performances. In 2012, he independently released his debut album, “One Wish”. Now, “Rasta Evolution” released under Nature's Way Ent. contained several significant hits.
