Q:Remembering the lyrics from Lupe Fiascos hit song – Has Hip-Hop saved your life? How?

A:Shout out to Lupe! Hip hop has definitely changed my life, where I come from it’s shaped the whole community. Growing up we didn’t have too many after school or sports programs to keep us out of trouble, my after school program was me in my room with a notepad for others it was the corner. It kept me off the streets and away from the negative influences in my environment.

Q:What do you see yourself doing in the next 5 years?

A:I see myself doing alot more on the production side. I’m already writing and producing my own stuff, I’ve been writing and producing for other artists alot lately so I’ll be getting more into that. I’ve also caught the acting bug and have a few indie films I’m putting out with my label real soon. Besides that I’ll be performing all over and looking into other business aspects like helping to start a few non-profit organizations for kids and giving back to my community. But til then I’ll always be perfecting my craft and trying to bring something different to the table with my music so…Look out for me!

Q:Tell us what Monkey Muzik is? Describe the style?

A:Monkey Muzik is more than a label..it’s a movement! A union of the concrete jungles best! Its real, its genuine, its what the industry needs right now. We don’t pride ourselves on what we drive or the length of our chains, people are tired of hearing about that. We originally started it to build a name for ourselves but its become so much more in a short period of time, we’ve been able to bring together so many artists from New York and across seas through this movement and continue to keep doing so. Our style of music takes from so many genres, so in a way we’ve created our own but with the passion and energy hip-hop had in the early going into the late 90’s. Our modo is to stay as true to ourselves as we can while not being afraid to step outside the box.

Q:What is your specific genre of music within Hip-Hop?

A:I listened to alot of blues and folk music growing up, in fact one of my favorite artists still to this day is Tracy Chapman. So I’m hip-hop but I’m so much more, I’m also influenced by soul, garage, alternative,r&b etc. My people call it “soul-hop” but I couldn’t give it a name, it’s a blend of so much!
