Chain of Fools is a song written by Don Covay originally intended for the majestic Otis Redding. It is claimed that the song is an unauthorized rewrite of a gospel song named "Pains of Life" recorded by Rev E Fair & The Sensational Gladys Davis. Covay recorded his demo version of Chain of Fools while singing Gospel with his brothers and sisters. After listening to the demo Jerry Wexler, an Atlantic Records producer, chose to place the song with their rising female star Aretha Franklin in 1967 rather than with Redding as he felt a women’s voice would do more right to the song.

I'm very happy and glad to share this new one with you. It's my first edit that I'm giving to friends that isn't hip-hop, soul, or disco. I've been wanting to try a new direction (either Rock or music made in the 1960's) and hopefully you all dig it. Also, this is professionally mastered & mixed by my guy Al Jieh, which is also another first for me.

The Rolling Stones need no introduction and since they are in the middle of celebrating fifty years (!!!!!!) of being together, I think now is a good time for you to enjoy this. I took one of their lesser knows hits and gave it some punch, effects, and the usual King Most trickery

My plan was to not remix, but re-play the song in a full live setting, as if in 1975 Bowie recorded the original and then flew to Brooklyn (or even Jamaica) to cut another take with my players. Everything was recorded 100% analog to tape. All on equipment that was available before 1975. My approach was to take influence of the Jamaican musicians (and recording styles) of the mid-seventies, and their infatuation with American Soul music. If you dig it, that would be great. Knowing that BOWIE digs it, I’m over the moon.
