Closer To Me is the first instalment from the upcoming album from King Shi. A combination of Downtempo and Hip Hop infused with Soul and Funk elements. The rolling break shuffles and sways throughout as a warm and saturated bass line bumps from kick to snare. Strings layer and whirl through the leads as they’re dubbed with keys and additional strings that swell and accentuate the established melodies. This is King Shi doing what he does best: making immersive Downtempo beats.

Closer To Me

King Shi is back with a new atmospheric track that combines broken hip-hop rhythms, jazz melodies, violins and cellos. All instruments are led by a rhythmic piano, which adds depth and mystery, attraction and tranquillity, like on a dark night, when you can look at the sky, look at the stars and have a good rest from the bustle of the day.

This album was a partial endeavour into all branches of trip hop, spanning all of the eras of music. I said in my Hidden Gems Vol.I EP that i would make a jazz EP, but it proved more difficult that once thought! It still happening though; I've just got to get my music theory up to par. I think there also might be a return to Drum & Bass/Electronic genres, in the form two/three different EP's.

In the one year period since the release of Hidden Gems Vol.I, I have also been learning Ableton as well, which has been interesting (Primarily used to be FL only). I think looking at workflow and attempting to refine it is a must for any artist. It brought me to the realization of just how much workflow affects the sound of the output you create. Trying to refine a process while still retaining the exact same sound is a difficult process! :P

The concept behind the EP is multi faceted. Everything from the cover to the names to the audio content inside the tracks themselves tells a story. I've used a lot of layering inside the tracks and have really tried to provide emphasis and tension where i felt necessary to create amazing moments in a track. Frenic has created a concept album in the Trip Hop tradition taking influence from a wide selection of source material that includes Hip Hop, Dub, Soul, Funk and Folk. This has all been crafted together using deep beats, scratches, huge dark reverbs and saturated lo fi sounds. 

Based on the book “A Hero with a Thousand Faces”. By Joseph Campbell the trilogy seeks to engage with the concept that all stories have one common theme and by understanding this your own hero's journey can be enlightened. 

“Whether we listen with aloof amusement to the dreamlike mumbo jumbo of some red-eyed witch doctor of the Congo, or read with cultivated rapture thin translations from the sonnets of the mystic Lao-tse; now and again crack the hard nutshell of an argument of Aquinas, or catch suddenly the shining meaning of a bizarre Eskimo fairy tale: it will be always the one, shape-shifting yet marvelously constant story that we find, together with a challengingly persistent suggestion of more remaining to be experienced than will ever be known or told.”(Joseph Campbell)

In recent years, Russian independent scene has repeatedly shown that our country is rich in musical talent and real nuggets. Modern technologies allow to create, without leaving home, and sometimes without leaving the couch. Someone is limited to only the tip of the iceberg, and almost every day churning out the same type of backing tracks, but someone is trying to get the most out of these technologies and their music, "I". The latter can be safely attributed and producer from Siberia under the name King Shi. To work on their new full-length album "The Asian Wind", he spent more than a year, carefully polishing his sound and selecting the best of their own projects.
The album - a true example of downtempo-quality music from Russia, which is not ashamed to appear in front of and peers from the EU and the U.S. and western public before the election. It is worth noting that the release of "The Asian Wind" will be held on the European netlabel Dusted Wax Kingdom in the first half of July 2013. This well-balanced, high-quality and emotional music definitely deserves support and not get one in your circle of players.
