In this chapter we met Vardae, our beloved Cedric, who suddenly became a great friend due to his curious, interesting and pretty personality.

Vardae (@vardaemusic) is a project with the ambition of breaking away from the genre barrier, to explore new sounds territory around the love of psychedelic music. His productions and performances result in a percussive and hypnotic sound, a combination of tribal rhythms, repetitive leads and atmospheric textures which navigates from dub to tribe, passing through techno and drum’n’bass. Vardae defends a universe where immersion and experience prevail over codes with the idea of offering a journey to each of its appearances.

They been seamlessly blending their styles, playing back to back for the whole two hours 💥

Fear of Music (http://fearofmusic.org) was in many ways a precursor to Standards & Practices @stanprac — we threw sporadic events and shared mixes online, made by likeminded midwest techno fans during the 'dark years' (the aughts, when minimal ruined everything). This was the first release in our mix series and, as of today, it's exactly 15 years old. To us, it still sounds ahead of its time.

From @karlpmeier — 'It's hard to believe this mix is 15 years old. Pretty soon it'll be asking for the keys to the car and the ability to stay out past 10pm. Funny story - one night Jeff and I were at Smart Bar (I think; "the mind plays tricks" as Alan Partridge famously said) and Jeff had been telling me about this artist named 2562 who had released his first LP, "Aerial", the year prior. Jeff had been listening to it non-stop and told me that I absolutely had to investigate. Well, long story short - we were approached by friends that night to open for him at Lava Lounge. We could hardly believe it - it was such a odd coincidence. Now, at the time, I knew very little about "dubstep", ultimately - that was more Jeff's area of expertise. But I was intrigued, and it was a fairly exciting time for electronic music, as there was a lot of genre "cross pollination" going on. All the cheap rave revivalism hadn't started to happen just yet, and there was seemingly a lot of room to explore combining techno and other genres with this new form of music. Jeff and I had expressed some interest in what we could do DJing with Ableton, and this inaugural outing is fairly representative of what we were listening to at the time - and also reflects other influences that we thought might fit in and work well. Really, we were just drunk on the possibilities of what we could do - and ultimately I thought it all worked out quite well. The night ended up being probably one of the most successful gigs I'd been a part of in ages. The crowd was up for it, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Anyway, that's enough nostalgia - hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening.'

Slovakia's Warm Winters Ltd. celebrate their fifth birthday with Prah, a compilation that tenderly maps the contemporary Slovak and Czech independent scene. Simina Oprescu's exploration of the relationship between materiality and sound is embodied in Sound of Matter I, in which the sound of bells gradually builds into a meditative dronescape. An introspective desire for mutual connection is expressed in Man Rei's pandemic-era piece. The selection is rounded off by new releases from Shakali, Tomáš Šenkyřík, Olga Anna Markowska, Áron Porteleki, buttechno and many more.

Much like the banyan's ability to thrive in various environments, from dense forests to urban landscapes, my mixtape traverses through a multitude of electronic music genres. From the deep, atmospheric beginnings reminiscent of the shaded undergrowth to the vibrant crescendos akin to sunlit clearings, the mixtape mirrors the adaptability and resilience of the banyan tree.

COLA REN is a music producer and DJ based in Guangzhou, China. Her sound is inspired by her observations of humanity, introspection, and experiences traveling the globe. She excels in using sound to depict organic visuals and emotional colors, guiding listeners through rhythms originating from different roots of the world.
Her debut self-released EP 'Hailu', a fulsome ambient, Balearic, and downtempo brew with a gorgeous sense of melody and spirituality that offers a soothing escape, which has received early support from Lena Willikens, Vladimir Ivkovic, Salamanda, K-LONE, Al Wootton, Joe Delon, Mixmag Asia and more.
