Mala Junta rabble rousers DJ Tool and D.Dan are up next for Zenaari Mix 010, but leave your biases at the door because this isn’t their usual high-speed mischief. In the vein of Zenaari’s hallmark off-kilter electronics the Berlin based pair are here instead to take you on a journey within. This one’s less for warehouse raving, more for solo spiritual contemplation: an invitation to probe the subconscious and transcend material experience. It’s a thorough exploration of their ambient predilections that range from featherlight textures to faded melodies that lilt like waves on a metaphysical shore. This liminal collage of gentle lullabies and acoustic murmurs is soft and a touch plaintive, but warm and loving all the same. Invoking everything from glitchy IDM to ballads that bend towards the strange and pineal, a technicolor dream sequence conjured up by this offbeat techno double-act.

Archive find: Back in 2017 OTOROKU hosted a second 3 day Art Ensemble residency - this time including a Q&A with members Roscoe Mitchell, Don Moye, and Hugh Ragin - hosted by journalist and broadcaster, Kevin Le Gendre.

The rich and detailed conversation spanned Art Ensemble's music and teaching practices, their engagement with contemporary issues and into making jingles for the juice company 'Odwalla'. 

Huge thanks to members Roscoe Mitchell, Don Moye, and Hugh Ragin, to Kevin Le Gendre, to Fabio Lugaro for the photo and to Shaun Crook for recording.

Sad Cowboys And The Sound of Rain ~ Daniel Rincon

For the third instalment of “Cowboys And The Sounds Of,” an Editorial mix series from longtime contributor @napmusick , we’re treated to the sounds of sad country music and trains passing by. The combination is unexpectedly heart-wrenching, as if the sound of trains bring us back to an era of long goodbyes and far distances. Three years in the making, Rincon’s two hour collection of cosmic country and folk is a testament to the enduring heartbreak and beauty of the genre. 

Daniel Rincon makes music under the moniker @napmusick ,  is one half of Ambein Baby and La Fe, and runs an experimental electronic label @sonidoisla out of Montreal.
