AM: Hey hey! What you been up to recently?

Hello! I've recently relocated to a small town in the midlands of Ireland after spending three years in Portugal. Missing my pals back there but have been absolutely loving the cold weather and living outside of the city. Back in a proper routine of working on music for the first time in years, so finally gonna finish some projects I've been working on for a long time. Also spending a lot of time walking and cycling around. I got a new bike that's like a hybrid between a touring bike and bmx last week, it is truly the dream whip!
 
AM: How and where did you record the mix? Was there any theme etc behind it?

It's all over the place in terms of genre and mood, so I suppose the only theme is just that I really like all of the music in it. Unintentionally, about half of the music in it is made by friends actually, I have only copped that now. 

I spent a few days here just going through the stuff people had sent me, my youtube likes, recent Bandcamp purchases, etc, then just started putting it all together in a session, collage-style. I'll start with maybe 100 tracks and whittle it down. I think about fun/interesting transitions more than a linear trajectory. It probably doesn't sound like it to whoever is listening to it but I spend a pretty absurd amount of time arranging these things haha. I can only manage to make one or two per year. It would be amazing if I could apply this level of concentration to working on my own music.

AM: What have you got planned for 2023? 

Frog-wise, I've got an LP nearly done, which will be out on wherethetimegoes at some point next year. I've also got a single coming out on a great label based in NYC in January, but I'm not sure whether I can openly announce it yet. In any case, I'm excited about that. I have a couple of shows in the UK in Spring too.

Apart from that, around this time last year, a group of us who are loosely affiliated with wherethetimegoes got together for a week in Mayo in the West of Ireland and recorded lots of music over the course of a week. Seán Being has spent the year extracting an LP from the sessions and it's gonna be out soon. 

Life-wise I'm going to spend the next few years learning construction and carpentry with the hope that I can partially escape the laptop prison in the future. Dreaming of building a little house or studio somewhere heavenly. Time will tell.

With Malgré la nuit, musician Aho Ssan and photographer Bertrand Cavalier offer a back-to-back mix of ambient music. This hour of meditative, layered music takes its inspiration from the film Interlude of Bertrand Cavalier for which Aho Ssan is making the soundtrack. 

This film is shot in New York City in the middle of the night and plays with the effects of darkness on the characters, the buildings and the streets, providing a feeling of vertigo of liquidity. The mix was created for the sound exhibition The Night Watch curated by Claire Contamine in 2023.

This series focuses on field recordings, organic sounds, sound design, meditative and nostalgic pieces, soft percussions, spoken word, film excerpts, edits of teenage memories…

The idea came from the fact that over the years we started noticing our shared tastes. Our two imperfectly parallel paths started converging and the desire to launch a gentle, slow show was born.

It originally took the form of a residency on Noods and this year we decided to make the project mobile, nomadic, taking it from radio to radio. We are delighted that the first destination is Kiosk, a venue close to our hearts.

Kaleidoscopic psychedelia from one of Australia's finest.

While it might feel early to call bets on DJs of the decade, Kia Sydney, best known as Kia, is undoubtedly one of them. The Animalia founder began in Naarm's (Melbourne) underground scene in the mid-2010s, crediting a trip to the influential deep techno Japanese festival, Labyrinth, as the inspiration behind her sound.

Deep techno might not cut it as a descriptor for Sydney's sound, though. Hypnotic ribbons of steely techno mix with atmospherics and nimble grooves, drawing from IDM, dub and tech house, sharing as much with DJ Nobu and Donato Dozzy (try to find the track that overlaps with Dozzy's own RA Podcast) as well as modern practitioners like Priori and Beatrice M.

This distinctly Australian scuttling psychedelia has made Kia one of the most sought-after underground DJs globally. Her brainchild, Animalia, showcases a plurality of sounds and scenes, serving as living proof of the fruitful shift of the 2020s: less serious, perhaps, but with a sense of open-minded worldliness that offers a far more promising vision of what dance music can be and achieve.

Sydney's rare talent lies in forging connections, bringing people, sounds and ideas together with a distinct playfulness. Her RA Podcast showcases this alchemy in abundance, weaving classics like Monolake and Enya with peers such as OK EG, Cousin and Command D.

As she told us in her 2023 Breaking Through profile, "people tell me I have quite a distinctive sound but I can't tell so much because I hear so many different versions of it." RA.973 serves as confirmation that Kia's style is, to say the least, the mark of a generational talent.
