In 1975 I wrote my first song, I remember going to college and playing it. 

Now nearly 40 years later I spent some time working on it, added a chorus and finished it :)

Old track with a little production. I wrote it in 1978/9 when I was 18 and I still love it now.

Work hard settle down,  find a nice girl
Don’t waste your time on silly little pipe dreams
They’re never ever what they seem

You can blow of steam on Friday night
But watch your mouth and treat those girls right
They’ve seen you around and think your a heartthrob 
But don’t give up your day job

Because it’s all you got

Happy’s just a word 
in a room with a view
and when your eyes are closed
and the lights are out
There’s nothing but darkness 
to dream about

It seems harder by the day

Back in the late seventies early eighties I frequented a club in Stonegate York. Thursday night if I remember correctly was 'Student night' this is a small insight into that club 'The Old World'

Remember student night 
in the Old World
Upstairs downstairs 
we were chasing those girls
Waiting for a second glance
A slow dance
Your last chance     
before the lights go up

There's a guy on the dance floor
dancing to cars
Thinks he's Gary Numan 
as he lip sinks the words
Waiting for the first sign 
The right time
That says 'She's mine'

And as the disco ball 
spins around and round
reflecting the lights 
on a beautiful crowd
but all I can see 
is a wonderful girl
dancing on the floor in the 
Old World 

I loved the way she danced 
in her split skirt
She played with the buttons 
on my torn shirt

A moment like this

To keep afloat of this turmoil that I hide

Woke up this morning 
wishing I was dead 
One to many drinks 
still running round my head
A girl I didn’t know 
was sleeping 
in my bed

I remember drinking shots
in a bar on the upper east side
talking to some guy
about his father who had died
Then he told me that his girlfriend 
Had left him 
for some other guy 

Well there’s always a story 
at the bottom of a glass
Sometimes full of tears 
And sometimes full of laughs
I guess it’s where it ends
And not starts
that matters most

So I left him with his sorrows
and the baggage that he carried
I Stumbled to the street
And saw a lady in a hurry
She was trying to hail a taxi
To drive her 
through the night

I asked her where you heading
She said ‘somewhere I’ve not been’
Do you wanna share a taxi
then smiled and waved me in
Her eyes where like the sky
on a warm 
September eve

Well there’s always a story
In the back of a cab
People feeling happy 
And others looking sad
I guess it’s where your going
And not been, that matters most

Then she told me of her life
and the places she had seen
reflecting on the men
who would never let her be
and as she kissed me on the lips
A tear rolled down her cheek

Well I woke up this morning
So glad to be alive
The woman that I met
Still laying by my side
over eighteen years have past
and it feels like yesterday

Well there’s always a story
That echos through your life
A love that’s everlasting
a star that shines so bright
I guess it’s who you have
And not lost, that matters most
