Some of you may know or guess that the event series LE FLAH takes its name from the rather popular and well known song Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka by Heltah Skeltah / Fab 5.

This song and its sample source – Catalyst’s Uzuri – are always played at the event LE FLAH right after the act finished the live set – our own little tradition.

Preparing for LE FLAH’s 10th edition, the small-scale festival LE FLAH FEST in June 2014, we asked all the fest’s acts as well as all acts from the previous 9 editions to compose a beat out of the same sample source, Catalyst’s Uzuri. Enjoying the vibe and the surprising variety of the outcome, we keep asking our guests to provide such a beat for every session – this is one of the resulting beats, brought to you by KILL EMIL!

LOA Records is very proud to present the first album in 7 years by Brighton-based beatsmith Flevans (or Nigel Evans to his doctor). A music industry veteran, there's not much that this man hasn't done - sold a stackload of records (on renowned indie Tru Thoughts), DJ'd across the globe (3 US tours, 1 each in Japan & Australia & countless trips to Europe), had his music used in TV shows & adverts far & wide (Nokia, BSkyB, DFS & ESPN to name but a few), even releasing a side-project album of garage electronica for Jalapeno Records (under the name Aotoa). Despite the temporary hiatus, he is best known & much loved for his Flevans material, and it has to be said that new album 'A Distant View' is right up there with his best. 

Starting off strong with 'The Comeback Kid' - a piano-led, heavy-on-the-drums opener, 'I Don't Know Why' then eases you in gently but keeps the funk with its' infectious guitar & sublime keywork by regular Lack of Afro collaborator George Cooper. Slinky bass & big horns then dominate on the uber-groovy 'Wise Men Say', before Flevans proves that what sets him apart from other producers is his ability to switch tempos at the drop of a hat (& make it sound easy - trust us, it's not). Beautiful soundcapes that have the ability to take you elsewhere are rare enough these days, but both 'Stripped' and the title track 'A Distant View' are stunning examples - dreamy hooks and ethereal vocal samples come together to produce little journeys of downtempo loveliness. Punctuating the two is 'Higher Places' - reminiscent of the Flevans of old - chopped up vocals & cheeky samples interpolate to superb effect. "But where's the Afrobeat?!" I hear you cry? Well, it's right here in 'The Sound That Man Made' - horns, drums, guitar, done! New single 'Reach Out' is a blistering funk-filled return to form - a killer bass line, fatback drums & catchy horns combine to create an uptemo ear-worm & guaranteed dancefloor kudos! The tempo is dropped once more for the quite brilliant dub of 'Trials', before 'For Olli, For Eliisa'. Flevans here showing producers everywhere how to perfectly blend the electronic and the organic (the track also being a beautiful ode to his two children). Its business as usual on the neck-snapper 'Be There', before 'One For The Road' wraps things up brilliantly, Blaxploitation-style! Taking no prisoners from the outset, it's a huge slice of rough & ready dancefloor funk with huge drums, relentless wah-wah guitar & massive horns. What more do you need? 

So credit where it's due - 7 years since the last album & Flevans still sounds unmistakeably like himself, and no-one else. With 'A Distant View', he's back and back to his best!

Chillum Trio started out as a collective of like minded musicians in 2002, however, after releasing an album together (which was supported by the likes of Laurent Garnier) the project slowly became the solo act of founding recording producer, Geza Szekeres. At that time he discovered West-African music, latin jazz and the universe of soul and funk, these new directions have been shaping his musical evolution eversince. In 2014 he turned out as one of the winners of Gilles Peterson’s Havana Cultura remix contest that gave him the opportunity to travel to Havana and record music with the creme of the Cuban jazz scene. One of his songs recorded in this session got released on Brownswood Recordings compilations Havana Cultura Mix and Havana Cultura Anthology. Budabeats Records is more than proud to release Chillum Trio’s first ever 12” single called Cosmotropica with two dancefloor friendly tracks mixing broken afro-house with tropical and cosmic influences.

Greece's premier downtempo and lounge label Melting Records is branching out into like-minded genres with a new series titled MRSPECIAL. The releases in this series are indeed special, featuring a focus on a different style of music each time. This inaugural issue – Humble Dubbers – tackles the intertwining worlds old-school dub, roots, and reggae steppers, as seen through the Melting Records looking glass. Veteran dubwise producers and irie new names rub shoulders on the compilation's ten tracks, coming together to give the listener a mind-expanding journey along a space-echoed pathway.

Included, for the first time on vinyl, is "Nine Years" from Ticklah, a renowned producer who worked on Easy Star All-Stars' classic The Dub Side of the Moon. Easy Star All-Stars are also represented by bassist Victor Rice, contributing with a heavy dub track. Canada's Dubmatix took some time out from his packed touring and production schedule to deliver an exclusive rolling and blunted-out track for the compilation. And longtime German dub stalwart Burnt Friedman along with The Nu Dub Players provides a sparse and dreamy offering track that opens the collection with style.

Other artists featured on Humble Dubbers are Kabanjak (one half of Ancient Astronauts), YesKing (BBE Records), Shimi Sonic from Israel, Skinshape from Horus Records, Lo End Dub from Spain, Colman Brothers from UK, and up-and-comers Resonators (Wah Wah 45s). With this variety of producers it is striking how cohesive Humble Dubbers remains, giving the listener a satisfying overview on the state of nu-dub. The compilation also fits mightily within Melting Records' catalog, as lounge and downtempo elements are sprinkled throughout for a distinctive take on the sound. In all, Humble Dubbers vibrates and fascinates, from its rumbling low ended basslines to the crisp sizzle of flying hi-hats. Selectah, bring the rewind!
