Another visitor makes his way down the iron staircase to the 2Sox basement HQ, this time in the form of one of Glasgow's most trusted selectors, Laurence Hughes.

He and fellow house (and techno, and electro) expert Tom Churchill have been busy recently making very fine tunes together as The Nuclear Family - https://soundcloud.com/the_nuclear_family. Their self released 12"s are two of 2Sox' absolute favourite belter records of the last year. Be sure to check them out. Laurence's production credits go back as far as 2002, under the Elijah moniker on Jason Brunton's Iridite label. Tom founded the Headspace and Emoticon labels, which produced many a stellar release by himself and the likes of Dan Curtin, Future Beat Alliance and Marco Bernardi.

Laurence has been a resident at many a club night in Glasgow over the years, including the legendary Traxx night alongside our previous DTS guest Jamie Thomson. He takes massive pleasure in discovering, playing and discussing electronic music new and old. You'll normally have a screed of mental notes after hearing a set, and this mix will be no exception. It's also worth noting that he will teach you a thing or two about, and whip your arse at, table tennis.

A follow-up to December's selection of mid-90s Detroit-influenced UK techno, this time featuring some US producers in the form of Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin and Abacus alongside the likes of As One, Stasis and Black Dog. Deep and timeless music for heads and feet.

Golden Era Techno Part 2

Another selection of mainly UK techno from the early to mid-90s. On this one there's a slightly more uptempo/dancefloor feel (in the middle section at least), with some deep grooves from the Pure Plastic/Plaid family, LFO's Mark Bell in his Clark guise, a soulful techno masterpiece from Inertia (aka A Guy Called Gerald), and a raw heater from Neuropolitique on Irdial. Recorded from vinyl once again with authentic grit.

Golden Era Techno Part 3

Tom Churchill provides the 3rd guest mix.

Tom emerged in 1996 via his own label, Headspace Recordings, which went on to feature several of his productions as well as releases from Dan Curtin, Derek Carr & Sean Deason, among others. Together with sister label, Emoticon, Headspace established itself as an eminent UK label, and their releases are still sought after to this day.

Both labels ceased trading in 2006, and after a break from music production, Tom finally returned and has recently been releasing as part of a duo - The Nuclear Family.

Hjärngymnastik is a cratedigger project which aims to dig up and play electronic music released prior to the year 2000.  Styles such as Detroit Techno, IDM, Acid, Electro, Ambient, Bleep, Breakbeat, Jungle, New Beat, Deep House and many neighbouring styles will be heard in these sets.

Each sunday I'll be posting an hour of my selections. Some episodes will include guest mixes from excellent contributors - DJs, producers, record collectors and music enthusiasts. Within the same episode, the guest mix will be heard first followed by mine. A random drawing of brains conducting some kind of suspicious activity will of course accompany the set.
