Notebook Large Ensemble - Urban Furrow - West 4th

This is the first of 2 "Quasi-Ballads" which were improvised on a winter afternoon in November 2014 in Anton Hunter's house in Manchester. The music tells it: That day was cold and grey, one of those days were everything looks much worse than it actually is... Anton Hunter's guitar is on the left, Aming Liang's guitar is on the right, and Klaus Bru's C-Melody sax with some electronic effects on it is in the center.

Klaus Bru (卡 = pronounced Kaa) is one of only a few saxophonists performing exclusively on the rare C-Melody and C-Soprano saxes -- instruments which were extremely popular in the 1920’s. These antiquities sound utterly contemporary in Bru’s hands, particularly when he furnishes them with electronic treatment.

German born Klaus Bru has traveled widely, for real and in music. His musical concepts are not exactly the “out-of-the-box” type, and his artistic output is characterized by its variety: He brings in the folk music of the world (typically from Eastern Europe and Turkey), Avant-garde ridden improvisation concepts, air sounds and electronic noises, strange meters and odd tempos, plus -- last but not least -- singable melodies over the moving chords of jazz standards or his own compositions.

Klaus Bru was a well-known protagonist of the Vienna Jazz scene in the early 1990’s, and the Berlin Avant-Garde music scene in the late 1990’s. From 2002 - 2011 he lived in Taipei/Taiwan, where he became infused with indigenous music styles from various parts of the world. 

Klaus Bru has performed with the many musicians of the Taiwanese jazz and avant-garde music scene. He is the leader of the FolkRockJazz Trio ‘I Have A New Band Now’ (including Belgian bassist Martijn Vanbuel and Italian drummer Pietro Valente), and co-leader of the acclaimed Taiwanese group ‘Ka Dao Yin’ (卡到音), which stands at the crossroads of Contemporary Classical Music, Jazz, and Chinese Folk Music.

Klaus Bru has performed and recorded in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. with such diverse musicians as Franz Hautzinger, Peter Herbert, Bilal Karaman, Shih-Yang Lee (李世揚), Michael Moser, Sunny Murray, Marc Ribot, Martin Stepanik, Sabu Toyozumi, Chaoming Tung, to name just a few. Currently, he lives in London. 

Moreover, Klaus Bru has composed music for dance (‘Alex B: The Lefthanded Man’, Berlin 1999), theater (‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Steirischer Herbst, Graz/Austria, 1993’) and film (‘Mascara’ Taipei 2004), published a CD with electronic music (‘Collective Items’, 1998), created and produced interactive sound installations (‘Tiefenrausch’, Aktionsgalerie Berlin, 1997), collaborated with electronic artist Oliver Doerell (Dictaphone, Swod), worked as the international promoter for the Chinese music group Chaifound Music Workshop (采風樂坊) from Taiwan, and taught master classes on various musical topics.
