Detlef - Daxx (Original mix) - Moon Harbour

The 75th EP on Moon Harbour is one that connects the past with the present: the release is made up of three remixes and re-edits of classic tracks by label boss Matthias Tanzmann. Charged with serving up these goods are one third of Apollonia, namely Frenchman Shonky, Saved Records boss Nic Fanciulli and his brother Mark and, finally, Matthias himself updates one of his own cuts. 

That cut is 2008’s ‘Keep On’, taken from Matthias’ artist album Restless. The newer version is a tweak and tidy job that subtly injects a little more roll and slide into the original’s shuffling drums. The drunken synth sounds and infectious, never ending groove remain, but everything shines that bit brighter: dance floors will no doubt be delighted to hear this one dusted off and dropped once again.  

The next track under the spotlight is 2011’s ’Puddle Trouble’ by Matthias in collaboration with label regular Dan Drastic. English brothers and influential figures in the tech house scene, Mark and Nic Fanciulli are the ones who remix this and do so with a keen sense of rhythm. Their version hurries along in elongated rhythmic fashion with lots of wobbly synths, subtle drops and distant sirens all adding to the hypnotic and increasingly intense sense of groove. It fits in perfectly with the Moon Harbour canon and is a timely update. 

Lastly, Frenchman Shonky, who is a DC10 regular with his comrades in Apollonia and has just released his debut LP with the same outfit, edits Tanzmann & Stefanik’s ’Basic Needs’ from 2006. This one is a little more electro inclined with its restless bassline, slapping percussion and jumbled drums. Prickly and kinetic but with a bulbous bassline holding it all together, this one is perfect for those late night freak outs. 

Proving that Moon Harbour have evolved on their own terms whilst always staying true to their roots, this EP is yet another modern tech house masterclass.

It’s been a decade since the Moonbootica first dished out the electro-tinged cut “June,” and next week the gents are slated to re-moonboot the tune. Apart from their own upbeat update, they’ve tapped a solid list of remixers to weigh in on the package, with Stil vor Talent’s Teenage Mutants bringing his handy house flair to the affair. He patches things up like a pro, allowing the melodies to retain their shine, while mounting them atop a full-bodied percussive groove constructed for contemporary crowds.

Following on from the success of their Gully EP at the end of summer, Leftwing & Kody return to Moon Harbour with another firing collection of club cuts. 

This esteemed UK pairing have become synonymous with big, characterful and attention-grabbing house and tech tracks on labels like Suara, Relief and Truesoul. They are party starting DJ favourites across Europe and Ibiza, and always get maximum muscle in their beats. Their second offering on Moon Harbour proves that point once again. 

First up is the standout ‘Detuned,’ a raved-up number with busy claps and blasts of siren that will get hands in the air. Freaky bird-like sounds and roaming bass all suck you into this kinetic groove. Equally compelling is ‘Rock That’, with a snaking bassline that creeps about beneath rattling hits and toms. It’s a bright and metallic cut with catchy vocal riffs that amp up the energy levels as the drums keep popping and firework synths rain down from above.

Italian duo The Deepshakerz return to Kittball with two vocal driven tracks in Breathe Lazy this February.The Deepshakerz first appeared on Kittball back in 2013 with their New Mind EP only to reappear on Kittball Konspiracy Vol.7 later that year. Nuremberg duo Roumex returns to Kittball with a pair of melodic house tracks entitled ‘Katharsis EP’ this April.
The fast rising pair, who debuted on Ron Flatter’s Pour La Vie Rec. this time last year, first appeared on Kittball with a track on the label’s long running Konspiracy series before quickly following up with their ‘Tantalis EP’ in December. They now return to Tube & Berger, P.A.C.O. and Juliet Sikora’s established imprint, continuing on from releases by Illyus & Barrientos, The Deepshakerz and Rob Kali.
Tantalising atmospherics join emotive male vocals and sultry bass in ‘Katharsis’, a mesmerizing cut that builds in tension throughout it’s nearly seven-minute duration. Oscillating synths then join crunchy percussion in ‘Victorious’ as deep chords work alongside spellbinding nuances to conclude the release.

Having started my bi-monthly mixtapes back in 2012 Mixtape 2019 marks the EIGHTH year of my mixtape series! I started pushing mixtapes EIGHT YEARS ago, that's kinda madness! What a journey those eight years have been.

To the people who have been listening since day dot, to the people who have only just started listening and everyone in between thank you! My mixtape's are my 80 minute journey of music, my way to explore, express and share my passion. The next release on Matthias Tanzmann’s Moon Harbour will be a first appearance on the label for Steve Lawler with only his second EP of the year. The VIVa Music boss has long been a cornerstone of the underground tech house scene, not only with his own raw productions, but so too because of the talent he nurtures at the label, and the parties he headlines and hosts around the world from Ministry of Sound to Sankeys Ibiza.
The first track is ‘Silk Roads’, a purposeful house track that shows Lawler’s knack for crafting slightly tribal, always engaging grooves with rolling sub bass holding it all together. The production is meticulous, with plenty of contrasting surfaces rubbing against each other, folding in over and over and taking you with them each time. There’s as much for the head as the heel though, with a loft melody floating up top to finish off a classy bit of work.
‘Hoffman’s Potion’ doesn’t mess about and immediately settles into another of Lawler’s trademark grooves. Precision cut claps and hi hats bring height to the low down kicks, whilst muted but slightly ravey stabs add a mischievous edge to the track. Just as you get settled, the final third comes alive again with another lingering melody: it’s a simple yet effective touch that will bring reactions from the floor and keep people locked right until the end.
Refreshingly modern and typically well designed from someone with Lawler’s credentials, Moon Harbour have secured something a rare but deserved outing from the VIVA boss.
