If you're an up-and-coming producer whose debut release is commanding the attention of Roman Flügel, Mano Le Tough and Bicep, it's safe to say you're doing something right. Hailing from Belfast, LOR is doing just that; his focus on hypnotic melodies and subtle experimentation gaining support from big names across the world of techno and underground electronica.

LOR's aforementioned debut release is in fact a 3-track set of remixes, on which the Irishman puts his spin on tracks from three very different musical heavyweights: Derrick Carter, Arthur Russell and Kraftwerk - the latter of which particularly peaked interests here at DT. Adapting the pioneering German band's distinctive sound to fit a more danceable framework, LOR crafts a haunting slice of techno that proves infinitely more exciting than the original to ears spoilt by the current sea of forward-thinking electronica.

Accompanying each track is a video also created by LOR. The producer has a penchant for building complex patterns from simple computer code, so he's knocked up entrancing clips that look halfway between MS-DOS and a Spirograph set. Check it out over on YouTube:

Casually stumbling into the new year without having to strenuously reorganise those awkward slices of obsolete black plastic, your faithful Finders Keepers Radio Show hosts head straight to one of the most reliable and varied corners of the record room and the trusty/crusty/musty shelf controversially marked KRAUTROCK!  A German-born genre previously known as kosmische before the Wümme based group Faust adopted the potential slur as the movement's new blanket tag. 

Aiming to stretch the genre's ready-elasticated boundaries that little bit further Herrs Votel, Mitchell und Shipton try to avoid the obvious major label gatefold trophy records (and happily fail at the first furlong) by adding 1970's DDR pop, German DIY punk, early Krautsploitation horrotica, Deutsch library records and other strains of lesser known Krautsider pop. So expect all the big hitters from Dusseldorf, Munich, Cologne and, errr, Altrincham while swimming in a sea of crackle via freakish visiting cabaret bands and unlikely collaborations spanning five decades... For all those purists, snobs and naysayers out there, we are joined by the original vocalist from CAN, Mr. Malcolm Mooney who is happy discuss Stockhausen, The Fat Boys and David Bowie to add more salt to your tangerine!

Quiet Village, the duo of Joel Martin and Matt Edwards (who hails from Radio Slave), set Ferry’s “Me Oh My” amid dense jungle foliage. While their collection of edits released a few years ago on K7, Silent Movie, found them in a playful mode, their remix work since then has truly taken on the exotic spirit of their moniker. Like their drastic reconfiguring of Allez Allez’s “African Queen” or Bubble Club’s “The Goddess,” Martin and Edwards strip and slow everything down, past the slink and forced pan-culturalism of most downtempo fare, into something verging on the ritualistic. They take it to tantric lengths of ten minutes or more, fully allowing that slow heart of darkness throb of it all to overtake the space and cast its spell.

A massive hand drum figure thunders unhurriedly. Slowly, other sonic components crawl to life around it. Flutes trill like tropical birds, a crash cymbal sizzles to life, a synthesized drone that stays in the shadows but can still be felt. “Me Oh My” is a study in restraint, and each time it pressurizes to the point that release must surely come, Quiet Village recedes back into the fronds for fifteen transportive minutes. Bryan Ferry’s telltale coo echoes in the distance and then suddenly that seductive whisper is near your ears, not on a distant plateau, saying: “Can’t you hear my beating heart go in and out of time.”

Deep Dub Mix
