Arranging an early Bach piece, like BWV 106 "In Gottes Zeit," can feel like a sacrilege. The original is just too perfect. Well. Obviously, there is no original recording from 1707, when JS Bach composed at the age of 22. But there is the score. And in the score is the chord progression together with the rhythm and the melody on top. JS Bach wrote it as funeral music. Funeral music. That is when you take somebody to the final rest, the “big sleep.” And there is the “little sleep,” and the music then is called a lullaby. Rest for 10-12 hours until the next sunny morning. This chord progression also works on your little ones. Why is THIS chord progression so close to existential matters? Beginning or end. Short answer: it has “dignity.”

This is an open-source MIDI arrangement for piano. I ran it through the standard piano sample of MuseScore. Then I fed the resulting audio into Suno and prompted it to add some modern rhythmic enhancements. Give yourself and your existential matters a little rest while listening to this music.

For JS Bach back in 1707, everything was embedded and explained in the Christian context. We don't have that luxury anymore. Most of the people I meet lost the connection between belief, music, and their own dignity. Unthinkable for JS Bach.

Berlin based, ‘piano poet’ Federico Albanese took inspiration from the brief transitional state between day and night, writing a collection of chamber-music miniatures that withdraw, explore, yet assert their laconic melodies all the more decisively. The emotions to which Albanese has given expression in his thirteen compositions have been articulated with well-considered gestures.   

Equally well-considered is the choice of instruments that Federico Albanese deploys on ‘The Blue Hour’. Piano and synthesizers are joined by a cello, magnified by over-dubbing and sound effects that culminate into a little chamber orchestra, which swells the acoustics while checking the dominance of a clear solo voice. Albanese esteems the Gesamtklang, the overall sound image, with its mixture of compositional precision and dreamlike fluidity. For this reason, the pieces are recorded from start to finish on analogue equipment, further enhancing the warmth of their sound. In ‘Céline’ we hear a discreet beat, scarcely perceptible, a gentle pulse that lends structure without jeopardizing the charm of ‘The Blue Hour’.

The musical studio is a broad-spectrum cognitive pathway that through interpretations, new readings, audio manipulations, original and recomposed tracks, investigates the expressive canons of the seventeenth century.
This recomposed is the final act of the performance.
