The verse from James is a hefty text.  “We should not like the world.”  So should we stop our social action, close Renew 88, stop employing a community pastor?  To be honest, the text has often been read in this way, esp. in the past.  People tended to create a high wall between Christians and the world.

This could be a short sermon: ‘Be wise; become wiser. Amen.’  Wisdom is vitally important in life.

James tells us that proper religion is looking after orphans and widows. The early Christians acted accordingly: in Acts 6 we see that there was care for the widows in the first church (although some were overlooked because they spoke a different language.).  Paul later took up a collection for the church in Jerusalem.

Our readings today tell us that it really matters what you do: do the right things, do as you say, be a consistent disciple of Jesus.  It is our lifestyle that matters and our lifestyle is what people see.  Our discipleship (or lack of it) will be seen.

Here in James 2 and elsewhere in the Bible, various words are used and the right choice of words is hard: trials, temptations, tests.  But the basic idea is: Satan tempts us and wants our downfall – God tests and examines us (like teacher) so that we come out better.
