In this talk, given in the course of Franciscan University of Steubenville's 2013 Annual Conference on Christian Philosophy, I set out what could be St. Anselm's response to the guiding question of the conference:  "Must Morality be Grounded on God". 

In typical Anselmian manner, I say, Yes and No, and go on to discuss how Anselm would envision the possibility of a purely secular de-Christianized morality on the basis of his moral theory, and explain reasons why for Anselm any adequate moral theory and practice would preclude such an approach.  I focus on God as the ontological ground of value, contributions Christian revelation and reflection make to moral theory, and what ongoing practical engagement with God and the Christian community provides to moral practice.

As God unveils the fifth and sixth trumpet judgments in Revelation 9, the plagues are becoming increasingly serious. In the fifth trumpet judgment, locusts torment people on Earth for five months. The pain is so severe that people wish for death, yet death flees from them. In the sixth trumpet judgment, after the angels are released from the River Euphrates, they kill a third of the human race. But people still do not repent of their idolatry and other sins.

Anyone in their right mind would feel that these plagues were very cruel, and may even wonder why God is so “cruel.” But in fact, hidden within these disasters is God's great love for the lost. Jesus said that the Father loves us just as a shepherd loves his sheep. “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost” (Luke 15:3-6). Jesus said, "Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance" (15:7).

Surah 42: Ash-Shura (The Consultation) - Recited by Ahmed Abdelhamid Tahoun

Ash-Shura is the forty-second chapter of the Holy Qur'an, consisting of 53 verses. It is a Meccan Surah and the third of the "Hā Mīm" sequence. The Surah's title, "The Consultation," is taken from Verse 38, which highlights the characteristic of believers managing their affairs through mutual consultation (Shura).

The Surah's core theme is the absolute authority and unity of Divine Revelation. It strongly defends the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a messenger in a long, continuous chain and emphasizes that judgment belongs only to God.

Key Themes in Surah Ash-Shura include:

* The Unity of Revelation: Affirming that the religion preached by Muhammad (PBUH) is the same eternal faith revealed to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
* The Importance of Shura: Highlighting the social characteristic of true believers, which is to consult among themselves when making decisions.
* God's Power in Creation: Pointing to the vastness of the heavens and the earth, and the diversity of creation, as undeniable proof of God's power and singularity.
* The Command to Forgive: Encouraging believers to repel evil with good, and stressing that the reward for patience and forgiveness lies with God.
