Hot Since 82 - Time Out [Knee Deep In Sound]

Sunrise is my favorite way to describe the magic of Burning Man.

There are 365 sunrises each year, and most of us consider it a privilege to sleep through them. But during one week at Burning Man the attendance of sunrise is a must. In the desert, as a collective, we make things that are otherwise ordinary occurrences into sacred spectacles. We make costumes for the sunrise, we compose music for it, and we go through death-defying stunts to take incredible pictures of it. And so it goes with many things at Burning Man; things that we take for granted in the real world are treated differently on the playa. It is not just the rising of the sun that we elevate to mythical proportions, but human traits like kindness, patience, uncertainty and flexibility are also celebrated, tested and recharged in Black Rock City.

Through audio and video captures, these extraordinary treatments of ordinary things stand a chance to be implemented in the outside world, not just for those who were there, but also to people who never traveled to Burning Man, and who - through these captures - are reminded that certain basic things in life can hold more value if we so choose. With every unusually nice thing that someone did or said to us at Burning Man, with every unprovoked smile we received from strangers in its dust storms, we will be charged and challenged to pay that spirit forward the other 51 weeks of the year.  And every morning, the sun will faithfully show its face to remind us of this opportunity.  

So, the next time we need to set our alarm clocks because real life responsibilities demand us to be awake before dawn, let’s choose to be grateful for witnessing the sun peek over the horizon or through our concrete jungles, while most other people are sleeping through it, and let’s remember that we are ambassadors of that magical place that celebrates the beauty in ordinary things. 

Today is a good day to be awake!

It’s been a long time coming but finally we’re very pleased to welcome
back Nils Penner to the family fold.  His Munich/Berlin EP from 2 years
ago still sounds the business when dropped today and he’s clearly a
talented producer who puts quality before quantity when it comes to
releases.  As one half of Penner and Muder Nils has been responsible for
giving us such classics as Presence Of Another Man and their sublime remix
of Around Your Neck by Fiakun Team.  But he’s definitely a force to be
reckoned with when going solo too as his recent EP on Compost will attest
to.

Here on I Can Be, Nils continues where he left off creating a brilliant
electronic house track with his own unique style shining bright.  Loose,
jazzy drums keep things from getting too heavy whilst the vocal makes sure
this one keeps the classic vibes intact.

Flipping over we have Pittsburgh Track Authority delivering their remix of
I Can Be, where things get toughened up, stripped to the core and force-
fed more steroids than is strictly healthy.  Jacked up funky techno is the
end result, but this is deep and rolling techno with a bounce in it’s step
and a cheeky glint in it’s eye. Simply adorable if you ask us.

Finally, things close out with State Of Mind, a modern day torch-song for
the lonely, a hymn for the lost generation, or simply a deep and moody
tale of lost nights on the dancefloor and lost marbles the next morning.

Now here's something special. Johannes Brecht returns to Poker Flat with a little night music, a trio of deep, dramatic and driving house tunes that in their precision and inven- tion are testimony to a distinctive intelligence.

Since an impressive stint as musical direc- tor for Henrik Schwarz's "Instruments" project and the subsequent release of 2013's "Holla", Brecht's reputation has been growing steadily with a series of carefully crafted 12"s. And if "Trois Nocturnes" is anything to go by, 2015 is set to be his year.

Nuages" hinges on a sinuous, snake-charming synth line. Instantly memorable, it's an exquisi- te headphone experience that's equally deadly on the dancefloor.

The lilting "Sirènes" teems with ideas, its big kick burnished with a dancing synth motif and a chamber orchestra of synthetic strings.

Last but not least, the motorik 12-minute "Fêtes" contrasts its knotty, brittle piano line with sus- tained pads and bright, striking syncopations.
