A fantastic gig by Swell in Brussels, 22 years ago.

At the time the V.K. was THE place were everybody wanted to play.

Monte happened to be a skateboarder (sponsored by Santa Cruz if I remember well). Being a skater myself, I had a nice conversation with him and the rest of the band, while downing many Duvels and Palms at the bar after the show.

I played some extracts of this gig on Rock-A-Gogo (Radio 21), the daily Belgian rock show curated by Jacques de Pierrepont on RTBF back in the day.

I saw Swell again in S.F. a few years later (summer 1995 I think - at a place off Market Street), I managed to talk to Monte, who remembered our drunk evening in Brussels a few years before, and put me and my wife on the guest list.

Saw them once again in London (Dingwalls) a few years after that.

I can't really remember why I went to that festival - probably for R.E.M. and the Ramones. I was even more amazed when I dug in my old tapes that I recorded the Depeche Mode gig :-) Well, 32 years later, there you go! The only think I remember was that the dance moves of Dave Gahan seemed a bit strange to me at the time...
