70s and 80s underground dance selection of the cosmic kind. 

Cosmic disco is a fascinating subgenre of disco that emerged in Europe, particularly in Italy, during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It’s often described as an underground, eclectic, and experimental take on disco, blending elements of funk, electronic music, Krautrock, Afrobeat, and even soundtracks or classical music. Unlike the polished, mainstream disco sounds of the era (think Studio 54 or the Bee Gees), cosmic disco was raw, spacey, and avant-garde, thriving in niche club scenes rather than commercial airwaves

The genre’s sound was less about polished production and more about raw, quirky, and sometimes bizarre combinations of instruments. It shared DNA with related genres like Italo disco (with its synth-heavy, electronic edge) and space disco (a crossover of Eurodisco and hi-NRG with cosmic themes). Lately the term has widened a bit (for me at least) to include some types prog rock and even new age music.

Titled ‘Transmission 96′ the new album features ten tracks which has us reminiscing on late night escapades and the dark lofty warehouses of our youth.

Two pioneers of the UK underground, Liftin’ Spirits has been at the forefront of jungle and drum n bass since the early 90’s with Dj Persuasion having earned his credentials as one of the most definitive dj’s in the scene from around the same time all the way up to the present.

There is a splendid air of nostalgia about this release – it sounds exactly as it should, channeling elements of the past alongside modern influences in a way which feels true to the rawness and rugged sensibilities of the genre.

This track is the lead single from the release – a dreamy affair with all the euphoric notes hitting in the right places. All underpinned by quintessential breaks and sounds which might have been lifted straight from an airfield or barn in the 90’s.

This mix contains mostly tracks from the New York Art Funk scene blended with a few tracks from the UK inspired by sound.

So what is art funk? To be honest it's term I made up. If you go to discogs you'll find "art rock" but no such thing as this. I define it as something from the late-’70s/early-’80s New York scene. It's blended avant-garde experimentation with danceable grooves. You hear elements of funk, disco, punk and jazz into a singular sound. Funky bass and percussion galore.

Beyond Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell’s disco-inflected project) and Talking Heads, key players included outfits like Liquid Liquid and ESG, no-wave provocateurs such as James Chance & the Contortions, and boundary-pushing collectives led by producers like Bill Laswell’s Material.
