"The original version of London Elektricity's Just One Second is among our all time favourite tunes. Making a chill-out version out of it was not only a challenge but also labour of love. We recorded live instruments such as strings and keys for it to get a warmer and more intimate feel and to get most out of the vocal. The overall tweaking took months, but we feel every moment spent in the studio was worth it."

Birmingham’s Poppy & The Jezebels are back with a new single on their own Gumball Machine label on the 30th April 2012.

‘Sign In, Dream On, Drop Out! (Richard X Meets Larry Least mix)’ was produced by Richard X (Sugarbabes, Kylie, M.I.A.) and mixed by Richard X and Daniel Miller, released as a download the single also features a remix from Substantial Error. The song addresses matters current on teen earth and suggests alternatives to the crushingly conventional pathways on offer today. 

The collaboration with Richard X came about when, smitten with his pop philosophy and intrigued by his remixes and ‘re-productions’ of Soft Cell and Saint Etienne, the girls approached the producer with their rehearsal room demos. He agreed and the single was completed in January when the band persuaded Mute Records founder Daniel Miller to collaborate – using the original Korg synth that appeared on his recordings as The Normal and Silicon Teens. Richard X then mixed this element of post-punk ‘synth Britannia’ with their modern take on girl-group pop. 

Wishing to connect with the energy experienced during their frequent forays into Birmingham’s club scene, the girls worked with teenage DJ / producers Substantial Error on a remix. Poppy then collaborated with young film maker David Stanley to create the videos that accompany each mix.

Poppy & The Jezebels met and started playing together at the same Birmingham comprehensive school when Mollie Kingsley (Vocals, Bass), Dom Vine (Keyboards, Vocals) and Amber Bradbury (Guitars, Vocals), then in year nine were joined by Poppy Twist (Drums, Vocals), a year older at fifteen. 

Seriously adept at social networking, the girls were travelling to London and sharing bills with The Horrors and Shonen Knife before Mollie’s fourteenth birthday. Soon after, the band signed a publishing deal with Mute Song and released two critically acclaimed seven inch singles, establishing their own label – Gumball Machine. Since leaving school, the band have spent the last year writing, rehearsing and recording and are set to announce a handful of UK dates in the very near future. 

Poppy & The Jezebels listen to classic pop from (Phil) Spector to Spears. They swear by The Slits yet retain a place in their hearts that is forever Spiceworld.

Marcin Czubala’s Your Mama’s Friend imprint goes from strength to strength with this, a new EP from Resketch, a producer who has risen through the ranks with fresh house and bubbly productions on labels like Well Rounded and Infinite Machine. 

Getting straight to it, the opening track ‘Yearner’ is a bright and polished, thoroughly new school bit of house that pairs some infectious garage hits with a catchy vocal hook. A swollen bassline carries the whole thing along as neon synths dart about in the spaces. ‘Werk’ again shows Resketch’s knack for designing great and unusual sounds. His synths are dazzling, the hits sound bubbly and distant and the results are purposeful as well as being full of mild euphoria. 

‘Linkway’ then goes deeper and more withdrawn, echoing voices creating an underwater feel as streamlined rubber kicks anchor you to a seabed. Pinging bass notes recall shades of the Bristol sound and the resultant effect is a sensuous and seductive groove. 

Closer ‘Livin‘’ is a big, swirling melange of deft synth details, gliding hits and liquid grooves. It swells then retreats throughout, allowing brief vocals to shine through the paddy rays of light before kicking once again. Resketch’s sound, like Your Mama’s Friend overall, is refreshingly modern and free from overtly familiar tropes... as such this EP might be the one that garners the man behind it the wider attention he deserves.

This EP is the outcome of a five month spanning transition between warm and bright summerdays to dark and dusky winterdays resulting in a change of moods that accompany this shift from lights, colours and sounds perceived everyday. It is a soundtrack made for commuting between different places in large urban spaces, filled by swarms of people shoaling and funneling across intersections, subway stations and central hubs like corpuscles pulsating in the cities veins, conducted by invisible algorithms in the symbiotic superorganism that is a metropole.

There are traditional parks and shrines/temples that really take you away from the high rise buildings and make you feel like you could be in the countryside. Next, there are typical shops, neon lights, offices and general city life, and lastly, there is the red light area which is a great place to see all walks of life, from gangsters, working girls and strange things behind closed doors. I'm fascinated by this place, It seems like another world to me, I'm always drawn to it out of curiosity and the feeling I get while passing though is really inspiring."</i>
