"a few tracks [are] from ‘00s era CDs i’ve found forgotten about in a weird/cool CD only store in Sheffield that has that satisfying ex-HMV racking you can flip through at high speed. no greater feeling than leaving there after an hour with a little envelope sized brown paper bag containing a saint etienne cd, some terrible/great chillout compilation, and a ken ishii thing you’ve not heard before for all of £10."

Rounding out an electrifying year, Sandwell District deliver a mix that both celebrates Bleep's album of the year End Beginnings and pays tribute to the man who helped them get this far. Silent Servant’s discography is a plentiful one and Sandwell shows it in all its colours, ranging from hissing electro to sputtering microbeats to revolving hardcore throb doused in mysterious ambience. Blissful ripples of soft rounded synth melody slowly flow into rebounding beats and slamming dub synths, transformed into tactile laser pulses and howling gusts of distortion. The predatorily strutting bass stabs of Sterile Hand’s ‘The Hunter’ is stealthy EBM under the cloak of night, contrasted by Tropic Of Cancer’s guitar twangs worked into slick yet turbulent percussive sequences Cabaret Voltaire’s ‘Silent Command’ edited into a jittery, woozy lofi dream.

This was the second to last set from 5 to 7 in the morning. Started of with a few minimal electro tracks and moved to acid and housey grooves as the sun was rising over the hills. A few odd ball surprises thrown into the mix to make it more fun as always.

Rezonant Body label head Daddy Hyphen (UK) goes b2b with Vilhelm Hasselgren (SWE) for a deep dive into the lesser explored spaces between Leftfield-Jungle, Dub-Techno & Environmental-Ambient. Building upon their successful split EP 'Auto / It's Raining (Sativa)' [Rezonant Body, 2024], this Rotterdam debut sees the two international artists bring their exceptional chemistry into a live setting, to create an evolving sonic dialogue between their respective musical vocabularies.

For the final show of the year, producer and @dj-pinch (AKA Rob Ellis) closes things out with a mix celebrating 20 years of his label @tectonic-recordings – an imprint which has been at the forefront of pioneering dubstep since 2005.

Established in Bristol, where Pinch has called home since the late 90s, Tectonic emerged from a city renowned for its creative communities and music scene, rooted in a history of reggae, trip-hop, and jungle.

The label’s first release was Pinch’s own 12", titled “Alien Tongue / War Dub” featuring P Dutty. From there, he went on to release his solo debut Underwater Dancehall and later, Reality Tunnels on Tectonic, alongside a slew of records from the likes of Peverlist, Loefah, Skream, Photek, Shed, and Mumdance & Logos. Beyond Tectonic, Pinch has collaborated with musician Shackleton on a ground-breaking album in 2011, as well as two projects with legendary dub producer Adrian Sherwood.

Over time, Tectonic’s sound has evolved from its dubstep roots towards the fringes, from breakcore and bass to experimental techno. The mix that Pinch has created for this month’s  Carhartt WIP Radio show traces Tectonic’s back catalogs, sharing past tracks alongside the present, with a few special mash-ups along the way.

The mix comes with an interview where Pinch eflects on the creative benefits of collaboration, the renewed interest in the meditative side of dubstep, and the lessons behind running an underground label for two decades. Read the interview at www.carhartt-wip.com.

Carhartt WIP Radio December 2025: Pinch / Tectonic

Joining us for Tapes #170 is Lulah Francs, a DJ, vocalist, songwriter and producer whose musical roots run deep, growing up between Ibiza and London with house music firmly embedded in her DNA.

"This mix focuses on the tunes that have been there for the middle section of my career. Everyone talks about the beginning of how it started for them and what tunes shaped them, and then how it is now in the current moment, but I rarely see so much about the tunes that come in the middle, the ones that shape you from possibly one thing to another, ones that you have with you at all times, not the foundations but the building blocks, the songs that have kept me safe and held me in undeniably the hardest sections of my career at times, the transitional rather than the transformational. 

This mix is dedicated to the tunes that have stayed with me over the last few years, ones that I possibly forgot about and disregarded slightly - here’s to keeping these ones alive, because they’ve meant a lot to me"

Up next for Tapes #171 is Yu Yang. Since the early 2000s, through her work with M Agency and club Haze, she has brought international heavyweights to China for the first time, all while consistently championing local talent.

After serving as musical director for W Shanghai – The Bund and The Shanghai EDITION, Yu Yang co-founded ALTER., a party series that brought together the world’s most forward-thinking selectors and China’s finest in carefully chosen venues. The result was one of Shanghai’s most sought-after nights and a genuinely strong community built around it.

As a DJ, she curates journeys across genres, guided by emotion and introspection while always keeping things fun and groovy.
