An arrangement of Nobuo Uematsu's classic track from Final Fantasy VII for the upcoming Materia cover compilation, which will feature a ton of musicians from around the world.

I tried to re-interpret the track with my own personal aesthetic while keeping the spirit of the original. I'm pretty happy with the result! I was excited to perform most of it without using samples and virtual instruments; most of what you hear are real, live instruments!

Everything here was arranged/performed/mixed/mastered by me except clarinet, which was performed by Elie Hartman. Original track by Nobuo Uematsu (for comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nswfLcROs-0). © 1997 Squaresoft. All Rights Reserved.

My rendition of "Pan" by Benjamin Britten. Sometimes I play oboe decently. Not gonna lie, I'm an on-and-off kind of oboist as much as I generally try to improve. A lot of people have this track already, but also my SoundCloud has been dead for probs years, so resurgo or whatever cuz I guess I wanna have this one saved in several places. Shoutout to Krislynn Odviar for editing.

"Pan" by Benjamin Britten

Dystopia was written to imitate a tense, action-packed, horror movie soundtrack within the percussion ensemble setting. Using a fairly large instrumentation (including piano), some interesting textures are achieved by way of bowed instruments (waterphone, tam tam, vibraphone), and gutteral, groaning bass drum effects. Frequent use of tight intervals and dissonant melodies add to the tension driven by a syncopated ostinato in 5/4.

Essentially, this is program music designed to take listeners on a journey of their own images. There isn’t a literal story being told here, but its structure takes us from quiet mystery to suspenseful pursuit, then action-based escape. These dramatic elements will allow each performer and listener to choose his or her own adventure by letting the music create a scary story line of its own.

Dystopia was premiered before an enthusiastic audience at the 2008 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois.

Titled here simply as "Interlude", it's a strange and somber anomaly in a typically festive genre not known for evocations of reflective melancholy. To be honest, I've been trucking around this dusty, otherwise unremarkable thrift-scrounged Barbados Steel Drums LP for well over a decade, simply unable to toss it out due to the oddball beauty of this one track. Its a crackly old thing by now, but maybe better that way...
