Alan Fitzpatrick debuts on Hotflush with an EP that reveals a new side to his craft, marking a departure from the uncompromising techno that has personified the celebrated artist’s storied career to date.

The EP’s original tracks draw on Fitzpatrick’s extensive production experience yet fit seamlessly into the Hotflush catalogue, retaining a dancefloor sensibility as they explore a range of melodic territory. The title track’s drama lies in its brazenly enchanted synth line, while B1, Vanishing, charts a deeper course, with a slow, percussive burn.
Recent Hotflush addition Auden contributes a remix that shapes the title track into an electro/IDM-indebted excursion.

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration.

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint.

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

 British powerhouse Alan Fitzpatrick returns to Figure with his second EP on the label after 2009's 'Weed Killer / Science'. Since then its clear that Alan has continued on a dedicated, valiant quest to find his own sound, and the results are on show here, with a heavyweight, emotive and futuristic Techno three-tracker.Like a warm rush of endorphins on the summer breeze, Alan's rich up-building sound is perfectly represented in tracks like 'A Subtle Change', with its jubilant stab-led melody, or the modern club-weapon vibes of 'Trigger Finger'. Harking back to late 90s UK IDM and 'proper' dub-Techno atmospheres, Fitzpatrick then gracefully crafts a down-tempo, space-out version of 'A Subtle Change' for the B-side, providing the afterhours sessioners with a new buzz-track.

EMOTIONAL INTOLERANCE is a dimension of FI that encompasses the perceived inability to withstand emotional distress. Pick your poison…anger, anxiety, depression, jealousy, shame, or another distressing emotion, and couple it with the idea that you cannot bear it and must be free of it yesterday. The problem is that the experience of distress is a part of life, much like taxes. You can’t really escape, and evasion does not typically turn out well.
Given that emotional distress is a part of life, you can either ride the wave of distress or insist that you cannot bear it and try to rid yourself of distressing emotions as quickly as possible. Emotional intolerance has been associated with the unhealthy negative emotion of anxiety, and also secondary disturbance (or disturbance about being disturbed). Moreover, when you think this way, you will likely act in neurotic ways that serve to circumvent emotional distress or alleviate anxiety.
Let’s say for example that you get into a fight with your partner. If you have emotional intolerance, you might make yourself get anxious and flee because you tell yourself that you cannot bear the emotional discomfort of the situation. Or, you might avoid a confrontation before it happens because you think “I couldn’t stand to lose control of my feelings.” In these scenarios, you might lose a significant person in your life or maintain the status quo for the sole reason that you can’t tolerate the emotional distress that is necessary to bring about change. Moreover, when you strengthen your emotional tolerance, you will be in a better place to make meaningful decisions, instead of decisions that are based on irrational thinking and disturbed emotions.
A key ingredient to overcoming emotional intolerance is identification of the elegant solution (or that which transcends the minutia). The elegant solution entails accepting our fate as humans who can withstand distress or negative affectivity. Rational coping statements might include: “I have been distressed before, I can stand this even though it is uncomfortable,” “It’s just anxiety, many people have lived through this and I will too,” and “While I prefer not to be distressed, there is no reason why I must not be. I can stand it and in this situation it is worth it to do so.” Part of the treatment plan will also include the development of practical coping skills to handle emotional distress.
Do you tell yourself that you cannot bear to have disturbing feelings? Do you tell yourself that you must be free of disturbing feelings as quickly as possible? How has it helped you to think this way? Where is the evidence that any of us cannot stand emotional distress?

Shadowy Avian duo SHXCXCHCXSH toast their upcoming debut LP with a simply amazing mix.

The Avian label has firmly established itself as a potent force in contemporary techno since it was founded by Shifted and Ventress in late 2011 with a singular sonic and visual aesthetic, ensuring a palpable sense of excitement and expectation attached to whichever artist from the small roster of Avian artists stepped forward to deliver the label's first full length album. That the honour has been handed to SHXCXCHCXSH with the soon to drop STRGTHS LP adds a further element of intrigue thanks to the lack of discernible information regarding the allegedly Swedish pair.

The forthcoming album is a logical progression from the material SHXCXCHCXSH have released thus far on Avian, Semantica and Subsist, delving further into the realm of hollowed-out techno across seven cuts brandishing typically scrambled track titles. Having agreed to contribute a mix, SHXCXCHCXSH turned in a thunderous hour long selection that contains moments of sheer sonic devastation (around the 40 minute mark in particular) yet also fits in specially edited post punk curios, demonic chanting and unreleased material, some of which is on the upcoming album.

The mix has been a near constant on the Juno Plus office stereo since we received it; however, attempts to engage SHXCXCHCXSH in further dialogue were met with short shrift with the following cryptic message their sole response:
