Herwig Mitteregger was born in Austria, but his family moved to Ratingen at an early age, where he attended the Innenstadt Highschool.

In 1976 he joined the Berlin band Lokomotive Kreuzberg as a drummer and percussionist. After their breakup the following year, he recorded two internationally successful German-language albums with the Nina Hagen Band in 1978 and 1979. Since the four musicians (Herwig Mitteregger, Reinhold Heil, Manfred Praeker and Bernhard Potschka) overlapped with singer Nina Hagen, the second album "Unbehagen", which had already been contractually agreed upon, was initially recorded instrumentally. Subsequently, Hagen's vocals were recorded in the absence of the musicians.

After the final break with Nina Hagen, the four musicians formed the West Berlin rock band Spliff (synonymous with joint), in which Mitteregger wrote songs, played drums and sang. Spliff released four albums from 1980 to 1984, including The Spliff Radio Show, performed as a rock opera, with Alf Klimek, Rik De Lisle and two other singers; also the album "85555", named after its order number, which brought Spliff nationwide success and was also released as an English-language edition. This was followed by the album "Herzlichen Glückwunsch".

Even before the band broke up, Mitteregger released his first solo album "Kein Mut - kein Mädchen" in 1983, which he composed, wrote the lyrics for, produced, recorded and sang. The band also recorded the soundtrack to the film Baby by Uwe Friesner, the music for the Schimanski crime scene Zweierlei Blut, and the fourth album Schwarz auf Weiß. A fifth Spliff LP planned for 1986 was scrapped due to solo projects; the four members split after the farewell tour in late 1984, although the band's split was never officially announced. Since then Mitteregger, who soon settled in Spain and set up a recording studio there, released five more albums until 1997, featuring various musicians. In 1985, the single "Immer mehr" was successful.
