Our TOTAL compilation series hardly needs an introduction: we rummage through the Kompakt releases to select our favorites from the past year that reflect our best and unsaid tracks, compiled and packaged as a cohesive whole. For TOTAL 16, the 2xCD and digital track listing features 25 prominent cuts from artists such as THE FIELD, WEVAL, REX THE DOG, TERRANOVA, HUNTER/GAME, FRANKEY & SANDRINO, JOHN TEJADA, BLOND:ISH or PATRICE BÄUMEL. On top, TOTAL 16 includes eight exclusive tracks which happen to make up the 2xLP vinyl track listing. What you have is a dynamic assortment and comprehensive profile of Kompakt’s current label portfolio, including both newcomers and veteran producers in peak form.

Keeping up a good old TOTAL tradition, we also planted brandnew material from core artists and friends – check out exclusive tracks such as MICHAEL MAYER’s aptly named ACTION, an absolutely rinsing acid cracker, or MATIAS AGUAYO’s stellar KOMM, sitting comfortably among his best and most stirring work to date. Meanwhile, JÜRGEN PAAPE drops silky, atmospheric synth pads on EDEN and THE MODERNIST teams up with Hot Chip’s JOE GODDARD for the pop-infused THE PRICE OF LOVE. Another highlight is the debut release from exciting newcomer LAKE TURNER: BEACON FIELDS is a misty- eyed, melancholic piece focussing on exquisite electronic textures and sweeping melodies.

As with previous TOTAL installments, we collect these exclusives on a separate 2xLP edition, but like to add a handful of cuts that can only be found on the vinyl version – for TOTAL 16, these include ALEX UNDER’s LLAMAN A LA PUERTA, a densely layered, slow-paced synth jam that makes for a inspired detour from the propulsive, lean beats the Spanish producer has become known for. SWEET 100 present a masterfully crafted study in hypnotic minimalism on SIX, while VOIGT & VOIGT hark back to the pounding, sensual abrasiveness of early Auftrieb releases on DENKEN SIE LAUT, crossbred with the tongue-in-cheek gloom of the brothers’ later, more psychedelic offerings.

We celebrate Jürgen Paape with “Kompilation”. A well deserved opportunity to hear Jürgen Paape for fans and newcomers – revived and remastered and for the very first time on double vinyl – in a way that it plays through like a full length album. Some of the biggest moments of Kompakt over a three decade history are here; the chorus of “So Weit Wie Noch Nie” remains timeless – there to send shivers of pleasure down your spine as we feel at the end of exhaustive end of a night. “Take That” is an anthem for the still to be built rock stadiums of tomorrow. It’s a bonafide hit that put him in the charts in Australia and Italy. – “Come Into My Life” remains undeniably one of Kompakt’s catchiest pop tracks ever. “So Wird Die Zeit Gemacht” – builds on Paape’s signature sound with the spirit and vitality of classic house and a truly demented vocal hook. Fun projects need to be shared. In this case I like to give away my newest fun project - I did in my free time. Hashtag is a combination of five elements in one track. With the focus on a snare drum roll, a upward pitching part, a melody, a fat baseline and acid elements. Acid in that case means, crazy sounds in a groovy beat. Hope you like it - have fun.

Good Times

After a storming 2014 with releases on VIVA, Quartz and Snatch Off, ONNO is back with his first EP for 2015 on Adam Beyer's acclaimed Truesoul label. For this 3 track EP, ONNO explores the more techno focussed part of his sound, while retaining that bottom heavy, hip hop inspired groove that he is renowned for. 

The title track, aptly named "Techno Jam" kicks off proceedings with a bang. Straight up heavy techno beats are broken up by a processed vocal snippet before bringing everything back full force. On the flipside we find “Come On”. For this track, ONNO follows a less-is-more approach, focussing on just one hypnotizing melody line and blending this with a looped hip-hop vocal to create a dancefloor cut. Digital only track “Breakbeat Bats” completes the package with some analog synths and heavy 909 rides. All in all, this is essential stuff.

When the Minicoolboyz changed their brand name to Many Reasons in late 2014, they were ready to embark on a new techno adventure. A bold move! Since then they have worked relentlessly on finding a new "language" to express their exciting and cutting edge sounds.

With the 'Call Up EP' they present us with three refined, peak time compositions that will elevate techno-sets for months to come. The EP's title track 'Call Up' consists of a thick, rolling groove, that is accompanied by a subtle but monstrous sub layer. The horn sounds and delay-effect filled percussions provide an overall transcendental vibe.

The 'Optic' slow burner steadily drills itself into one's consciousness. The massive kick drum glides through the track, while the sleek, minimal melody pattern adds an hypnotizing feel.

Many Reasons are closing out the EP with 'Invasive'. A rawer combination of moody sounds and crisp hi-hats are weaving a tight web around profound percussion sounds. A heads-down trip into the darker corners of techno.

The Underwater years from 2002 and 2004 gave birth to the new Gusgus setup with Earth as the lead singer.  The involvement of Darren Emersons label manager and his successful selection off remixers for the hit "David" was important part of re-establishing this new lineup.  This was not the first interaction of the band with Darren Emerson and his label as the first release on his label was the track with Tworld, Anthem in 1994.  As some of you might know Tworld merged into Gusgus when the band was formed in 1995.  Here is one of these remixes of David, carefully remastered for you.
