It's hard to believe DC Salas has yet to appear on Pets. A kindred spirit of Catz 'n Dogz, their paths have crossed many times and their sounds have crossed even more. Sharing a similar vision for deep, explorative, exciting and innovative house and techno, a release like this was only a matter of time.

Following big releases on Slowciety and Correspondant, Salas eases us into 2021 with four more wide-ranging cuts. 'Le Réveil' rings the alarm and wakes us up. An electrified maze of melodic layers and arpeggios, there's a great sense of mid 90s German house sounds that would eventually spill into the trance diaspora. Majestic, playful and crystal clean.

'Her Smile' takes us even deeper down the rabbit hole as acidic entrails weave in and out of the beats while more cosmic leads layer over the top. Reaching a great melodic crescendo mid-way, it's yet another great storytelling tune. And it's backed by two more late night delights: 'Another Chapter' takes us deeper and darker into the mix with a soaking wet, jelly-like bassline and big pads and chords that are reminiscent of Justin Martin or Ben Watt before 'The Morning Dance' brings us back home. Broken drums, clipped horn leads, a jacking spirit and an acid breakdown you could cook your breakfast eggs on. Good morning, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight. A release like this can be played at any time of day.

Last spotted on Pets playing cowboy and firing serious shots with his 'Lone Ranger' release, Brazilian maestro Renato Cohen makes a welcome return to Catz 'n Dogz imprint. And things are getting hot.

'Meltin' is pure, high grade, uncut funk. Bumping and thumping at an up-tempo 127, the whole groove is comprised by just a handful of elements, but the relationship between each ingredient and the space, brings such an interplanetary fatness you feel like you're driving inside the track.

Next up is the unmissable 'Drum Solo'. One of those golden tribal tracks that mixes in so well with absolutely any record you want to play it with and will get the whole crowd locked and fully focused. Would you expect anything less from the man who once famously gave us 'Sixteen Billion Drum Kicks'?

Last but definitely not least in this steamy, ultrafunkula menage-et-trios is 'Space Rockers'. Slinky, sleazy and well oiled, there's a mischievous filtered disco touch to this, but done with grittier 2021 cohones. Rocking? You will be.

A triumphant return to old form after classic bangers like PROTOTYPE (KOMPAKT 92), FREQUENCY (KOMPAKT 102) or MAXIMIZE (KOMPAKT 145), but also a bold step in a new sonic direction: Kompakt ally REX THE DOG presents his latest offering SICKO - a brand new 12" packed with two incorruptible rabble- rousers that hit the floor right behind the ears, employing sharply focussed thrust and dramatic sweeps to stunning effect.
Having started out with just one synth in 2004 - the same vintage Korg 700S that was used by Mute Records founder Daniel Miller for his legendary "Warm Leatherette" outing -, REX THE DOG knows perfectly well how to squeeze the most out of a limited set of sounds. A growing intimacy with analog gear finally lead the producer to design and build his very own array of modular synthesizer components, including a sampler fittingly called RTD-001.
Armed with this barn-storming DIY attitude, and using gear he made with his own hands, Rex pulls two strikingly muscular rabbits out of his hat: the A-side's title cut SICKO is a raw, pounding cut-up fest that builds a scary amount of tension just with a few distinct elements, while the flipside's KORGASMOTRON loads up its bleep-ridden chassis with a succulent, sweeping vocal and some well-placed acid drops. Both tracks showcase a leaner, cleaner, but also meaner approach to dance music, making this a particularly thrilling entry in REX THE DOG's oeuvre.
