A first preview to Marsen Jules new album "Beautyfear" to be released in January 2014 on Oktaf Records.

With "Beautyfear" on Oktaf Records the German electronic musician Marsen Jules (CCO, 12K, Kompakt) delivers one of his most outstanding albums so far. Mastered by no one else than 12K-labelboss Taylor Deupree and with a coverpicture taken by the highly acclaimed photographer Erik Madigan Heck from NYC, the best conditions are laid for a lasting experience of abstract musical poetry and touching soundscapeism. Jules has never been this dense, subtile and fragile before. All twelve tracks on „Beautyfear“ were created during a week stay in a theatre workspace on one of the hills of Lisbon. The panoramic view over the dusty city in spring seemed to have been the perfect surrounding for this cloudy soundscapes, which at some points remind of Angelo Bandalamentis‘ work for David Lynch‘s "Mullholland Drive". „It‘s an album on the fragility of beauty“, as Jules describes briefly. Music that can neither be described as ambient music or experimental sound art, but more likely delivers a poetic approach to music, live and sound itself. With „Beautyfear“ Marsen Jules makes a great start into 2014 and with the already announced cooperation with Swedish filmmaker Anders Weberg and an upcoming release of his works from a residence at the legendary GRM studios in Paris, one should definitely keep an eye on what is coming next. ﻿

After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

So when we early this year finally found the time to sit down and make a full length album there was so much we wanted to try out. Best known as half of post-classical / electronica duo PIANO INTERRUPTED, London based French producer Franz Kirmann goes back to his electronic roots with “Meridians”, his second album, due out on Denovali Records next July.

Strongly influenced by movies (he used to be a film editor and filmmakers Wong Kar Wai, Michelangelo Antonioni, Sergio Leone or David Lynch are happily cited alongside his musical influences), Franz Kirmann has a weakness for walls of sounds and fragile melodies, which to him are the sonic equivalent of slow-motion sequences, travelling shots or landscapes in cinemascope.

While his first album – Random Access Memories (released in June 2011) - was a sort of compilation of music he'd written since 2005, “Meridians” is a more consistent proposition where tracks were put together using the same technique of assembling tiny audio snippets and samples with a strong emotional content (from a pop vocal to an orchestral extract) and transforming them beyond recognition, to then assemble them and create something new and unique.

Music was then composed from the resulting sampling manipulation, adding layers of vintage synthesizers, drum machines and granular soundscapes and resulting in a sound that could be best described as a meeting point between an 80's synthesizer soundtrack and a post-modern electronic record.

The album title "Meridians" comes from the Chinese medicine's belief in the Meridian network, a path through which the life-energy flows. The album has a strong sense of an internal journey, the music being both an invitation to introversion and reverie but also suggesting an epic voyage. The meridians could be regarded as vessels carrying emotions, souvenirs, thoughts, travelling through the body and mind, provoking a voyage through one's own life without the need for movement.

Nods to the 7th art are not only found in the sound and feel of the album but also in its titles. Each of them suggest a story or moment while remaining vague enough to let the listener fills the blanks.

The long-awaited release of "Sinfonietta" by Marsen Jules crowns the year 2014 for Dronarivm. 

Aristotle referred the term "symphony" to music of the spheres that embraces the concept of a ethereal harmony. Sinfonietta, which lasts 45 minutes, is a very first element of cosmic architectonics, the miniature universe model. Unwrapping in time, this self-contained composition is skillfully woven out of orchestral sound fragments repeated in a cyclical manner. But it would be not enough, just to listen to this music. Marsen Jules offers a new sense of reality beyond the three known dimensions, where time is non-linear and perception is multivariate.

So here we are. Half-a-century of isolatedmixes. Each, a window into the world behind ASIP; an insight into the inspirations and passion behind the site and label over the past six years, and beyond.

I always set out to keep the series exclusively for artists who’ve had a profound impact on ASIP and I’m glad I’t’s stayed that way. We’ve been lucky enough to host heroes of the genre, legends, new-comers, friends and innovators over the years, and each one is special in its own right.

Ulrich Schnauss provided the very first isolatedmix (fittingly so) but as soon as I realized the series, I started making lists of artists I dreamt would contribute, and bvdub was up top. Brock’s music is unique, and as close to perfection in my world, striking a balance of euphoria, emotion and musical progression in every production.

Many of you would have heard Brock’s music if you follow this site in any shape or form, but I’m pretty sure there’s lots of who you haven’t heard a mix from Brock – they’re as rare as they come.

Brock turned me down a few times before agreeing to do this mix. Mainly because a mix to him, isn’t about sitting down for hours, maybe days and carefully crafting an hour-long journey (like it is for most of us). For Brock, he needs to be in the right state of mind; the right period in his life. Mixes zap him of energy, and if the inspiration isn’t there he wont force it.

Let’s just say the stars aligned on this one. Some true inspiration that led to the mix; an emotional moment that unfurled; and a unique and original approach, led to Brock pouring his energy into a personal journey in the most unforgettable and special way possible.

Thanks to Brock for this rare opportunity and insight into his world and to everyone who has contributed, listened, commented and downloaded the series so far. Here’s to the next 50.

The nom de plume Benoît Pioulard should be no stranger to anyone remotely interested in guitar-based experimental music. Pioulard has crafted a career creating softened, aching songs that pulse with given breath and slow decay along songs of fragile guitar melodies and a honeyed, yet supremely confident voice ringing through the reverb and acoustic guitar lines. 

On "Finity" PIoulard spins a deft web of sustained guitar tone that peaks, just above the red, in crucial moments - tethering an otherwise otherworldly composition to the very real, very messy world that we try to transcend through obtaining oneness with. 

A stately, gorgeous track, that for only two dollars, allows you to contribute to the literacy and ongoing learning of refugees at the Malindza Refugee Camp in Swaziland, Africa where every dollar spent at Heligator goes. All proceeds from the purchase of Heligator Records music goes towards maintaining the library through the purchase of supplies, the paying of the electric bill and a small stipend for volunteer refugee librarians.

Interrogating the contradictory dualism in the life that inspires art, this unique project displays the panoramic influence of Ozu, Neuer Deutscher Film, Weldon Kees and Yves Klein, as well as forming of a larger arch with TLO’s ongoing body of work.

Examining the multiple philosophical strands found 'In Search Of The Miraculous' - Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader’s intended trio of art actions, P D Ouspensky's book of the same name, Gurdjieff's early teachings - TLO pay homage to the artist’s continual search, even when the camera isn’t looking; searching for miracles, or simply an answer to the metaphysical why...

If life is art, can the artist decide where art ends and art life begins? Can they co-exist in one form? Do we celebrate the art or the artist?

As with all TLO releases, the material was recorded after development in live performance, with the new approach of using multi-track control over trademark tape disintegration for the first time. Edited, sequenced and mastered by James Plotkin for both CD and vinyl, with both formats offering different versions of the same work, ‘Go Straight To The Light Of All That You Love’ is an ambitious and densely rewarding entry in a sequence that fiercely questions the collective human failure to unravel complexity.
