With his new album, Year Of The Living Dead, Vienna-born and LA-based producer John Tejada finds a blissful extended moment of balance between the new and the familiar. Anyone who’s followed his career to date, which has included four previous albums for Kompakt, outings for storied labels like Plug Research, Playhouse and Cocoon, and numerous remixes and collaborations – most recently, his Wajatta duo with actor and musician Reggie Watts – will immediately sense the warmth and eloquence that Tejada brings to his gilded, pliant techno and electro hybrids. But there’s more here, too; an explorer’s glimmer in the producer’s eye, as he gets to grips with new ways of working and being, while offering a reflective opening for the listener, something echoed in artwork by graphic designer and ‘contemplative artist’ David Grey.

“The album was started using tools I was unfamiliar with, which became an interesting exploratory process,” Tejada says. “Staying away from the obvious and having to re-learn simple things was a fun challenge.” You can hear these new creative pulsions pushing the eight tracks on Year Of The Living Dead ever-forward; the album has an unique cast, and though there are trace elements of the genres Tejada has indulged previously, he’s never quite put them together this way before. There’s the dubwise glitter sprinkled across the moody opener “The Haunting Of Earth”, the kind caresses found amongst the deftly woven textures of “Sheltered”, and the churchy melancholy, all hymnal and golden, of “Echoes Of Life”.

Year Of The Living Dead also speaks obliquely to its moment, though Tejada works this implicitly, allowing the strange circumstances of 2020 to cast their inevitable shadow without being obvious or didactic. “The production process began right before lockdown and continued through what felt like a very serious time for all of us,” he recalls. “Not being able to see or touch our loved ones made me feel we are all like ghosts. We can observe from a distance but cannot really be there. We are isolated and alone.” And yet, Year Of The Living Dead’s tenderness offers an out for that anxiety and loneliness, its intimate immensities gifting the album a redemptive and compassionate core. Compact and glistening, Year Of The Living Dead sculpts unassuming beauty.

As a proud project of DGTL Records, the ‘Various Artists’ series originated with the idea of merging local talents with friends of the DGTL family. Continuing along these lines, the latest EP is a stellar extension of its 2020 predecessor. ‘Various Artists - Volume Two Remixes’ features 4 unique remixes by electronic music heavyweights. Expect a contemporary reimagining of familiar tracks by frontrunners Sandunes, Lauer, Fort Romeau and Tom Trago. Both Lauer and Fort Romeau have featured on previous releases, marking their return to the label.

Staying true to her skillful play on emotive soundscapes, Mumbai-based Sandunes (@sandunes) sets the tone. After making her DGTL debut at DGTL Bengaluru 2020, her spin on Lovshai’s (@lovshai) ‘Solo’ re-invents the cosmic-heavy house tune into one with progressive electronic elements and synth-heavy harmonies. Bringing us his remix of Vermelho Wonder's (@vermelhowonder) ‘Espetáculos Extraordinários’ is German DJ/Producer Lauer (@lauerofficial). Interweaving deep house grooves with an 80's-inspired disco sound, it’s an exciting play on the edgy counterpart.

Following suit, UK-based DJ/producer Fort Romeau (@fortromeau), takes his seat at the table. Recognised for his eclectic mix of house and techno, his remix of Pin Up Club’s (@pin-up-club) ‘Sanguine’ is an ambient re-telling of the original - with a touch of melodic influences. Widely recognised as one of the leading lights of the Dutch electronic music landscape, Tom Trago (@tomtrago) brings his frictionless sound and underground ear to FM Live’s ‘Tal Como Soy’. It’s a different spin to the dance heavy original, falling in line with the Dutchman’s groovy MPC- heavy sound.

Artwork is delivered by Tasso Okinawa, as part of the ongoing series he curates for DGTL Records.

DGTL Records proudly serves up Volume Two of its Various Artists compilation series this spring. 

The music is all coming from local artists of all the cities they have DGTL in, and they wanted to showcase this exciting talent and give them an extra podium with this VA. To that end, Perdu, Colyn, Magit Cacoon, FM Live, Yotam Avni and more all appear on this superb 12 track collection. 

Lovshai kicks off with the boogie bass and cosmic, future facing deep techno of Solo before FM serves up some smooth, seductive Detroit house that ripples with lush late-night energy. Dutchman Perdu offers The Light Within, which is an 80s tinged house track with old school chords and future-retro keys, Sanguine from Pin Up Club is a sleazier synth house affair with angular riffs, and Jenia Tarsol & Fortis's Baolam is a sweet cosmic prog adventure.

Brazil's Vermelho Wonder then offers the edgy astral techno journey that is Espetáculos Extraordinários and Colyn gets masterfully melodic on a series of skyward arps that lift you to the heavens. Elsewhere there is edgy grooves from Magic Cacoon, deep disco house from Sjamsoedin and floating techno from Yotam Avni that gets you in a trance. Davis's slick sci-fi electro track Vestido De Espaço and the tunnelling and hypotonic techno of PØLI & Lorenzo Raganzini's Velo closes things down in real style. 

Once again this is a fine window into the unique musical world of this essential Dutch crew.

When Mike Dunn released his Classic Music Company debut ‘My House From All Angles’ last year, the album was met with critical acclaim, The Guardian writing: “God may have made him funky, but Mike Dunn has kept it going ever since.” Now, two stand out cuts from the LP are given the remix treatment, enlisting some of the label’s closest cohorts to re-work these two irresistible hip-house jams. Up first, Peppermint Jam boss Mousse T. opens the release, weaving in his signature bouncy melodies and funk-flavoured grooves into ‘If I Can’t Get Down’. Up next, Classic label-mate and house expert Oliver Dollar brings in a raw, edgier sound on his Boomty Mix of ‘DJ Beat That Shhh’, with an aptly bumping bassline. Llyr brings his debut EP release on Mesh and the next issue in the 3D Reworks series, following the second binaural experiment by Reid Willis in June ’20.

The 3D Reworks series aims to challenge artists to express their work and expand their creative awareness to enable every listener to experience high-definition immersive audio. The EP comprises three tracks of headphone surround sound, immersive audio at it's most powerful. 

Experience: shifting scenes with trains thundering past; teleportation into a futuristic virtual reality headphone rave; and an escape to a digital dream-like state. Llyr presents music created using a mixture of binaural recordings captured of an eerily daunting present-day London by award-winning sound designer Will Cohen and a series of personal answer phone recordings left for him by Crystal Tassels, a renowned burlesque singer from the Berlin performance art underground

"In keeping with Mesh's 3D Reworks series this was originally conceptualised for headphone listening. I used binaural (‘3D’) recordings and lots of binaural (and other spatial) processing techniques. It should translate fairly well to regular speakers too, but you'll be missing out on some of the fun. I tried to create dense, dynamic mixes with a rich audio environment to explore. The intention is that with repeat listens you can discover different things buried in the music. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed creating it."

"Llyr aka Gareth Williams has been a long-time advisor and tutor of my own work for many years, and demonstrates his breadth of knowledge with this treat of a surround-audio package optimised for headphone listening. I was also excited to see the involvement of award-winning sound designer Will Cohen of 'String and Tins' studio. The result being an enveloping abstracted wander through dream space, beautiful sweeping harmonies, and even a delve into the dancefloor where we get a more centralised punch before returning to the outer edges of sound around our heads. It's a pleasure to hear and get lost amongst, many thanks Llyr.

Gone Gold is the second album from Herrmann Kristoffersen, aka Daniel Herrmann (Flug 8) and Kristina Kristoffersen. Mastered by Jörn Elling Wuttke (The Primitive Painter) it is inspired by the world of gaming and the idea of composing an imaginary soundtrack for the classic racing video game Need for Speed, but in their unique style - kosmische techno, ambient soundscapes and gauzy electronica.

Creating an imaginary soundtrack for a game and working apart due to Covid-imposed travel restrictions, it was logical that the couple would use the shortcuts from the gamers’ world to communicate with each other. Every title on the album represents an aspect of that, providing an insight into how to interpret the song, creating your own online gaming world while listening. First up is the album’s opening track - the early-Autechre/AI machine-funk stylings of 1LC (One Life Clear: playing through a video game from start to finish without ever losing a life).
