Rex The Dog has truly been Kompakt’s best friend since his debut “Prototype" came out in 2004. This London based producer’s signature sound channels the best of EBM, Nu Groove and solid state Rave Techno.

His 8 EP contribution to Kompakt over that time has become an integral part of the label’s story and his expansive modular synth live show is a unique experience in its own right.

We recently re-released Rex The Dog’s core back catalogue and the thought came to us – why not have a few of his favourite producers remix their favourite singles? The results come as “Versions” – a collection of 3 remixes from a varied crew of producers.

Krystal Klear is a staple of the Running Back family and runs his own Cold Tonic imprint. He picks “Vortex” and though sticks to the original melody, he contorts the dimension of the single into intergalactical levels of hi-nrg inducing techno.

Bawrut’s releases on Ransom Note speak volumes of his immense talent and he picks the classic “Sicko" to great effect. He conjures an endless intro – one of those build ups that make us miss the crowds of yesteryear ever so dearly.

Finally, the Austrian starlet Wolfram digs deep and goes for “Circulate” – a track that Kompakt never even released. Wolfram shamelessly takes the essence of Trance and New Wave to translate the original into a piece of pure dance floor glory for the modern age.

This piece of music is called Goldene Acht or Pale Clouded Yellow, a bright yellow butterfly with a figure-eight shaped pattern on its lower outer wings. As a migratory butterfly, an individual animal travels often several hundreds of kilometers. Over the year, the species produces three or even four generations. The last generation overwinters as a caterpillar. With this track I wanted to tell you about this never-ending journey from south to north and back again in several generation steps. Therefore new theme-generations appear in the track constantly, while having all the same migratory direction. At the same time it was also my endeavour to picture the elfin nature of this marvellous creature in a musical way. Every year I can observe it in my garden and enjoy its elegant flight from blossom to blossom for hours with childish astonishment.

Dieses Musikstück heißt Goldene Acht, ein leuchtend gelber Schmetterling der ein Muster in Form einer Acht auf den unteren Außenflügeln trägt. Als Wanderfalter legt ein Individuum oft mehrere hundert Kilometer zurück. Über das Jahr bringt die Art drei oder sogar vier Generationen hervor, bei denen die letzte Generation als Raupe überwintert. Diese permanente Wanderschaft von Süden nach Norden und wieder zurück in mehreren Generations-Etappen, möchte ich in diesem Track erzählen. Daher tauchen immer wieder neue Abschnitte von Klangmotiven auf, die aber alle stets die selbe Zugrichtung haben. Gleichzeitig war es aber auch mein Bestreben das elfenhafte Wesen dieses wunderschönen Geschöpfes musikalisch zu skizzieren. Jedes Jahr kann ich den Falter ausgiebig auf der Wiese vor meinem Haus beobachten und könnte seinem eleganten Flug von Blüte zu Blüte stundenlang mit kindlicher Begeisterung zuschauen.

KOMPAKT welcomes back three dear friends – Copenhagen’s WhoMadeWho. Tomas Barfod’s penchant for electronic music poetically juxtaposed with Tomas Høffding and Jeppe Kjellberg’s respective backgrounds in rock and jazz, gives their music an electrifying combination of sounds, merging a variety of influences to produce a unique sonic fingerprint that is emotive, irresistible and immensely satisfying.

Though we both have yet to strike a note together since the release of their 2012 full length “Brighter” (KOM 254), WhoMadeWho have been remarkably productive. With two full lengths, a DJ mix for Watergate’s series and releasing two of 2019’s most played out club tracks together with Rampa (Innervisions) and Artbat (Watergate Records), the trio have found themselves diving more and more into the world of electronic music, tapping into their goldmine of connections within the scene to spearhead an array of collaborations.

The result is Synchronicity – a series of 3 EP’s to be released throughout 2020 on KOMPAKT.

Synchronicity 1 gets introduced by none other than one of today’s most respected producers – Studio Barnhus’ own Axel Boman. With “Anywhere In The World”, they create an eccentric house number that conjures ghosts of Talking Heads past mingling in a smokey club that would make Adrian Sherwood proud. Echonomist is no stranger to the dancefloor with releases on Innverisions, Blue Shadow and TAU to name a few. Together they came up with with two of the four tracks. The first is “Interloper” and will appease any early WhoMadeWho fan’s appetite. The boys croon to an Italo bred disco rhythm of the catchiest kind. Adana Twins managed to get some studio time in with the boys before lockdown and with “Immersion” they make us yearn for the festival stages of yesterday’s past. It’s no surprise as they continue to dominate the Beatport charts which all started with their smash hit remix of “Roar” by our own Patrice Bäumel! Echonomist returns with the EP closer “Cecile”. They fall into a deeper affair carried graciously by WhoMadeWho’s signature baseline and the shimmer of guitars and sunset soaked synths.

The ends of days are ones with which Damian Lazarus is familiar, but, much like his biblical namesake, he too, has come back from the brink and risen to fight on, his career is interwoven with themes of survival and re-birth. Fittingly then, his second solo album does not wallow in our current dark times, but charts a path of hope. Flourish, offers a glimpse of a new world worth living in and surviving for.

Lazarus is a true DJ, an artist at home taking crowds on incredible journeys across the globe. He averages 150 + shows a year, including his own landmark events like Day Zero and Get Lost. He is nothing if not restless, no down time for Damian. Since February he has holed himself in the studio finalizing and reforming ideas that had been brewing for years. It took a pandemic to ground the DJ, but what emerged is a more fully realized vision of Lazarus as producer.

Flourish takes us through the many lives of Damian Lazarus, who, as he has grown older, and traversed the globe, has come to more deeply examine the role the dance floor plays in his own life and that of others. With parties cancelled, it would have been easy to wallow, but instead urgency took hold, and isolated Italian countryside Damian took the space to tackle the larger questions he has been grappling with for years.

“My early ideas about a new album were quite dark, pessimistic even, I had long been thinking and worrying about the problems of the world. Then the global pandemic and subsequent lockdown began and my fears seemed to become reality. But while writing these themes actually started to transform in an uplifting way. The new songs came together quite quickly, with renewed impetus, and mutated into a more positive outlook. Questions about faith, religion and spirituality all appeared amidst the darkness and fear, but in those times of quiet solitude and creation, I came to realise we can emerge into the sun and flourish on the other side.”

As anyone who has watched Lazarus DJ can attest, his inspirations are deep and varied, criss crossing show tunes, drum n bass, jazz, electro, soul, house, techno and everything in-between. This album reflects his immersion in a multitude of scenes over the years, from the early days of London drum n bass, to his role as a figurehead in the electroclash scene, and of course the significant impact his Crosstown Rebels label has had on contemporary underground house and techno. His shapeshifting is down to his relentless passion for new sounds and scenes, and it’s this dedication to the music that has seen him survive the boom and bust cycles and fads of club culture. It is this commitment to the outer edges of the dancefloor that has welcomed a resurgence of Crosstown as of late, a renewed reminder of Damian’s passion for showcasing the rising and revered alike

Flourish is far from a box of functional DJ tools, in the same way as Damian’s debut album Smoke The Monster Out or the more worldly outings in his brace of albums with the Ancient Moons. It’s a personal, brave and varied body of work. It’s also the work of an artist who has grown over the ten years since his last solo album. Lazarus plays with nuances of texture, tempo and style to create a rich and dense album that takes us on an odyssey that is at times both dark and uplifting. Vocals of his own cast an intimate shadow over the album with those of his sole collaborator Jem Cooke offering a soothing balance amidst the madness.
