Starting out in 2001 to tie up some loose ends from our regulars, SPEICHER has since become a guarantee for vanguard dance sounds from all over the planet, allowing KOMPAKT to invite and support electronic artists that comfortably inhabit both the delicate and the more deliberate ends of the electronic music spectrum. For SPEICHER 77, French producer extraordinaire SEBASTIEN BOUCHET returns to the fold with THESAURUS and BROKEN HEART, two new tracks that readily underscore his reputation as master of Rorschach techno.
Following 2010's exceptional FALLEN ANGEL (KOMPAKT 218), SEBASTIEN BOUCHET's sound cosm shows no signs of compliancy - it's still the same undercurrent of deranged minimalism running alongside a perfectly executed club framework and counterbalancing the occasional epic outburst. A first perfunctory needle drop on opener THESAURUS won't necessarily reveal its emotional intricacy, however, as a decidedly deviant lead synth drills its way into the listener's bowels and levels any dance floor subjected to its hallucinatory methodology. This music knows no mercy: whoever blinks first, loses.
On the flipside, the dizzying intensity of THESAURUS is replaced by the sweet melancholy of BROKEN HEART, a powerful techno ballad that doesn't need vocals to tell its tale of struggle and redemption. A deceptively simple, yet towering melody takes centre stage here, cutting through the smoke and mirrors of your average night out like a knife through butter. Together, these tracks yield a perfect flip-flop image for both veteran and novice crowds, delving deeply into the most leftfield of frequencies while creating emotive momentum for those in need of solace and community spirit.

01. DJ Koze - 40 Love

Berlin-based DJ and production duo Tale of Us take a step back from their busy touring and production schedule to compile the latest instalment of Renaissance's 'The Mix Collection' series. 

“We put this mix together in Mexico, looking out at a beautiful sea in a magical spot in the Yucatan, surrounded by friends and label mates as we recovered from an intense new year's and BPM rush. It was the perfect setting to take on something like this, looking back at the year behind us, not concerned so much by genres and boundaries as much as by assembling a musical picture of where we're at, where we've been and most importantly a little bit of where we're going. Each of the two mixes is a journey unto itself but together they can be seen as our musical chiaroscuro, reflecting a bit of the two sides of the way we think both about DJing and producing. It's hard to confine ourselves to just over 2 hours when there is so much music we've fallen in love with but this is the best reflection of this moment in time for us. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have.”

Throughout their first mix the duo move effortlessly between the driving aesthetics of Kollektiv Turmstrasse and anthemic highs of Scuba to more experimental and angular remixes from Baths and Four Tet. The second mix takes a distinctly more mininal approach, with the textures of Daniel Avery, Recondite, Robert Hood and Extrawelt's productions taking the driving seat and remixes from the likes of Donato Dozzy and DJ Koze switching up already excellent originals. Across both mixes Tale of Us have managed to balance the deep, melodic, upbeat and sometimes more challenging elements of electronic music through careful selection and programming to ensure both have the flow and finesse that listeners have come to expect of a Renaissance release.

Tale of Us are certainly no strangers to the decks, between throwing their own 'Just This' secret loft parties in Milan, regular fixtures at renowned clubs such as Berlin's Watergate, Ibiza's DC10 as well as live and DJ sets at festivals such as Sonar and Movement. Alongside this, their productions have caught the attention of Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves, Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss, who released their debut EP on Visionquest in 2011. 

The Mix Collection series saw it's inaugural 1994 release from Sasha & John Digweed, who set a new standard for the DJ compilation format. Since then Renaissance has undergone a musical shift, with recent contributions from M.A.N.D.Y., Gui Boratto and now Tale of Us helping to bring the original spirit of the brand to a new generation of music aficionados.
