Fanfarlo returned with their first new music in 18 months in the shape of new EP, The Sea, released through their own label New World Records. We have an exclusive stream of the very excellent remix of Tom Furse from the Horrors for your ears below.

Taking their name from a novella by Charles Baudelaire, their music originally fused indie rock and folk with a miscellany of post-punk and baroque-pop. Last year their second album 'Rooms Filled With Light' (2012) saw the band's sound evolve as they gained a taste for bigger lyrical themes and 80s synth pop.

Drawn to outside philosophers, science and lone visionaries, their new EP 'The Sea' (out Oct 2013, New World Records) refines their new direction. The third album 'Let's Go Extinct' (out in early 2014) sees Fanfarlo metamorphosise while attaining their original lure for fine musicianship and lyricism.

It is with great honor that I am able to give this away.  A tribute to one of my heroes, Frankie Knuckles.

The relationship between Detroit and Chicago, for me, has always been about connection.  Any kind of rivalry is secluded and irrelevant, in my opinion.

Chicago is approximately a 6 hour drive from Detroit, so, growing up we would frequent parties, back and forth.  On any weekend in Detroit, we could meet people from Chicago who wanted to experience our small scene in Detroit.

Whereas Detroit had a much more distant, cold feeling while still trying to retain human elements, Chicago house music always appealed to me because it seemed like the softer, soulful version of Techno.  I was drawn to the organ chords and the jacking indigenous rhythms of 808s.  Growing up with Detroit radio, we were exposed to funk music and a lot of R&B.  Some of the first records I bought were Change “Change of Heart” and Frankie Knuckles presents Jamie Principle “Your Love”, both artworks and music having very geometric, mechanical feeling, yet airbrushed and fun vibes.

Frankie Knuckles was the most pivotal figure in this movement, for me.  The first time I had heard “Baby Wants To Ride”, it really moved me.  The way the dot matrix synths moved in seemingly Euclidian patterns, the bounce and slight swing of that bass line, and the way the dissonant chords tied it all together.  One listen and you can see where I drew all my inspiration from when making my tune from 2006, “Hot, Raw, Sex”.  Let’s just say that record would have been a lot different without Frankie K.

“Tears”, “Rain Falls”, and “Your Love” among some of the best tracks I found on vinyl in Chicago.  A few of them so popular you could find them at Salvation Army.

What else can I say about Frankie that hasn’t been said this week?  With this track, we celebrate his life, his kindness, his love for music, his inspiration, his passion and all that he gave during his life.

Kon (kon & Amir) Catch The Beat

'Get Down On It' has been my all time favourite track for as long as I can remember.

Anyone who has tried to play it, knows how difficult it can be to mix in and out of, so here's a little something I whipped up so I could play it at last Saturday's party with Dicky Trisco on Sydney Harbour.

The dynamic duo of Sandman &amp; Riverside are at it again as the FastFWD label unleashes its eleventh release. Their Play Wit You EP is chock full of sexy house funk with top notch remixes from a couple of house music&rsquo;s influential tastemakers, Ron Trent and DJ Minx. The EP contains three originals featuring vocalist Kymberli Wright, all layered with drumbeats and synthesizers of varying timbres to take the listener on a whimsical journey &hellip; all cuts are bonafide galactic head nodders. First introduced to the house world via the Defected label, Kymberli Wright&rsquo;s soulful vocals gained notice throughout Detroit and beyond through her contribution to all-female jazz band Straight Ahead as well as having worked alongside such noted artists as Mary J. Blige and George Clinton. The first track with Sandman &amp; Riverside is &ldquo;Play Wit You,&rdquo; a Detroit-flavored gem filled with popping drum machine percussion, dueling synth melodies, and Wright&rsquo;s irresistible vocal hooks on top. &ldquo;PopTune&rdquo; is next, offering an enticing throwback to club music of the late &lsquo;80s within some powerful beats. Add Ms. Wright&rsquo;s wonderful vocal lines and this cut takes on the feel of Human League meets Shannon. The third track on the EP is &ldquo;SuperSonic,&rdquo; not to be confused with the classic JJ Fad ditty, though it&rsquo;s not too far off.
