The funk can do many things to you and for you, if you allow it to: it can hit you in the head, it can shake you in the hips, it can take over your soul. Put simply, it can transform you, changing your sense of reality and understanding of the world around you, as well as how you feel within. That's something this rhythmic principle so dear to our dancing activities does to us regardless of tempo or setting, of place or time, and its power is what puts this mix by gifted Parisian selector Clémentine in motion by propelling it while it carries us through a vast array of moods and moments, from intimacy to flamboyancy, from our ears to our feet, from dusk till dawn. The dexterity and delicacy she uses to guide us through these varied soundscapes is something with which listeners of her delightful Mellow Madness show on LYL Radio and anyone acquainted with her curatorial efforts behind the wonderful label Chuwanaga are quite familiar. Here she takes us on a journey that tests the universal reach of that musical template and proves its efficacy in improving all aspects of life, providing this series a proper return with an auspicious vibe to the year we just entered.

While PHONON's main interest lies in the early House sounds that once lit up Chicago and New York, he’s also always on the hunt for lesser-known records of different (brain-)danceable genres. 

This mix is the result of amazing hours @jan-abekrfcce spent in Japanese record shops during which Phonon mainly rummaged through boxes of domestic productions from the 80s and 90s.

Here some words from him, MFI / EAV asked him to share:

"I grew up in Singen (southwest Germany near the Swiss border) to the sounds of the Flamenco and Brazilian Guitar as well as Jazz - my father was a guitar and music teacher. I learned to play the trumpet and the drums (nowadays I turn to Synths and Drum machines.)  I have a thing for synth - Early Roland Pad sounds are my favorites.

In the context of music I like to research and understand historical contexts and roots and I try to translate that into my mixes. I started my collection with late 1980s House Music, loads of which I found when I studied & lived in NYC. 

I also lived in Milan for some years and return to Italy more than once a year. After that, I was in Leipzig. When traveling, I always try to find and bring back some special records, which might not be easily found back home."

Phonon lives nowadays in Berlin since 2019, although he travels and works remotely a lot. He has put up nights and DJed at Paloma, Beate Uwe and Bars. He also plays in Freiburg, Konstanz and countries where he spends time traveling/working remotely like in Italy, the US and Japan.

I’m delighted to invite ECE, a Berlin-based immigrant musician. DJ and producer, lead of the Turkish punk band Softa, she’s also a founder of Rebella Records, member of Wreckage Sound System and co-host of the now-deceased Salyangoz Potkest.
ECE has played in legendary clubs like Tresor, KitKat, Renate, and more, but her biggest guilty pleasure are llegal raves!
She has recorded this 1 hour techno mix, on a Sunday mood, gravitating around deep & mental vibes. Enjoy!

Who are you?

I am ECE, a Berlin-based immigrant musician. I am a DJ and producer, as well as the lead of the Turkish punk band Softa. I’m also the founder of Rebella Records, a member of Wreckage Sound System, and co-host of the now-deceased Salyangoz Potkest.

How would you describe your mix?

I always like to improvise my sets, drawing from my mood and what I’m currently listening to. This particular mix came together on a Sunday afternoon after three gigs and a very busy weekend. I was chilling at home, and it naturally evolved into something with positive, Sunday vibes. Normally, I tend to gravitate toward darker and more complex sounds, but I kept in mind that this is also a radio show. I thought it might be nice to listen to for anyone getting ready for their weekend or winding down at an after-party. I hope everyone enjoys it :)

Which artists, DJs, or producers inspire you?

All of them! Anyone who is truly good at their craft inspires me. I admire artists who are authentic in what they do. Uniqueness and fresh ideas always inspire me the most. Whenever I hear something truly original, I go, “Wooooooohhh, how could they even think of this?!” That feeling is what I live for. Because of that, I prefer not to name specific artists—it’s the originality that speaks to me.

What was your best moment on stage?

I think my biggest guilty pleasure is illegal raves. They are my deep love, and my best moments on stage have been at free rave parties. I love how autonomously and temporarily a complete utopia is created, only to disappear after a few hours.

Aside from that, I’ve been lucky enough to play in legendary clubs like Tresor, KitKat, Renate, and more. I don’t even need to say how special those moments are for me. All organizations that are driven by passion and professionalism touch me deeply.

And let’s not forget Fuckparade as well!!!!
