"One" brings together the potent forces of Brazilian tenor saxophonist and prolific free jazz icon Ivo Perelman, veteran bassist-guitarist Joe Morris (a ubiquitous figure on the avant garde jazz scene, making his recorded debut on electric bass guitar here) and Hungarian hardcore drummer Balazs Pandi (Slobber Pup, Obake, Metallic Taste of Blood, Merzbow).

With no rehearsals, no charts, no sketches or musical road maps whatsoever, the three risk-taking musicians entered the studio and made a joyful noise in daring, unadulterated fashion, pulling no punches while following their instincts from start to finish.

Fueled by the hard and fast beats of Pandi, who also demonstrates his remarkably versatile skills and keen listening instincts throughout the session, One is a highly interactive studio encounter that borders on the telepathic at times.

And with Perelman’s cathartic, Albert Ayler-inspired tenor sax blowing on top and Morris’ electric bass lines bubbling underneath, sparks ensue on this turbulent project.

listen to an interview with composer / improviser Ken Vandermark recorded in Montreal in June 2015 during the Suoni per il Popolo festival. during the festival Ken delivered a strong solo performance at Casa del Popolo on St. Laurent street in Montreal.

in this interview Ken outlines some ideas on the relationship between art scenes and gentrification in the US context. also Ken speaks about the importance of independent community spaces in the creation of innovative culture and the current challenges that musicians face in an economic context where non-commercial artists are finding it more and more difficult to survive. finally Ken also speaks about the importance of artists looking at their role in society in relation to the issues of our time, particularly looking at the systemic police shootings taking place in the US targeting African-Americans.

Krakow Nights (Not Two 937; Poland) Featuring Peter Brotzmann on tenor & alto saxes, clarinet & taragato, Steve Swell on trombone and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums.This amazing, long (74+ minutes) set was recorded at the Alchemia Club in Krakow Poland in February of this year (2015). As many of us know, all three of these musicians are extraordinary improvisers who keep busy and dig deep to unleash those serious, powerful spirits. Wow! This disc is superbly recorded so that we feel the energy lifting off and taking us along, riding higher and higher. The central figure here is drum wizard, Paal Nilssen-Love, a ball of immense, creative energy, who keeps pushing the other members of the trio. Euro free/jazz sax legend Peter Brotzmann has picked a perfect sparring partner here with the equally intense trombone great Steve Swell. This music is often exhilarating to the point of exhaustion but this is not everything we find here. On "Full Spectrum Response", the trio begins with suspense and restraint, just those soft burning embers and then slowly builds up again to some more colossal free yet focused improv. This just might be the best free/jazz disc of the year since it is just-dropping and edge-of your-seat exciting/crafty throughout. Absolutely mind blowing! — Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
