Ah, the weekend. You wake up excited, get up, have a shower and make your way to the airport. You down 5 pints because why not and then board your flight where you fall asleep and snore the entire plane into hating you, after which you land in the city of your show.

You arrive at the hotel and prepare your set feeling more excited by the minute. Your driver picks you up, you go to the artist dinner where your three favourite people ever are already waiting on you, even more drunk than you, and you get smashed and make your way to the venue. You get the bracelet, arrive in your backstage, down another 4 pints, complain to the promoter about the terrible food and then feel bad about it and then you hit the stage. 1300 sweaty people aching to see you DJ.

Life is good.

You plug in your USB and the first track you load up is Sovryn - The Weekend. The crowd absolutely loses it. Sweat and drinks are flying around. Shows are back. You fight to hold back happy tears. You almost forget there's been a pandemic ruining everything for a year and a half.

ProtoCode has been releasing cutting-edge bass music from across the globe since 2018. 

This July, the Perth-based imprint is set to release "Cybernetics", a collaborative offering from label co-founders Esym & Dead Zodiac.
Between them, the two have released music on labels such as Kill Tomorrow, Santoku Records and Cyberfunk; but "Cybernetics" marks their first releases on ProtoCode in just over a year; following on from Esym's "Universe / Desolation" & Dead Zodiac's "The Fall".

Cybernetics" features three Drum & Bass gems that easily balance screwface inducing sonics, deft melody work and precise rhythmic patterns. 

EP opener and title track "Cybernetics" kicks off with an ominous melody that gives way to a regal brass riff before launching into heavyweight bass lines. Basslines that feel primed to tear up sound systems worldwide. The track conjures up imagery of rain falling on a neon-lit cityscape, with the serene melody that glides among the rumbling low-end amplifying the sci-fi feeling of "Cybernetics". 

Next up is "Dominion". Here, an intricate rhythm section underpins warbling bass, sure to get limbs moving when dropped in a dance. 

The minimalism of "Interference" closes out proceedings. Its power comes from bass hits that pulsate throughout the track, while Esym & Dead Zodiac showcase more of their impressive rhythmic work with technical percussion lines that shine throughout the track.
