“I just thought this song had a really odd, strangely beautiful quality to it, which is why I used it to open the record. I like the idea of starting absurdly small and then getting quite big and epic about two-thirds of the way through. Hopefully, people won’t turn up their stereos really loud at the beginning to compensate, because it does get quite loud at the end; but when it begins, it’s just so thin and strange. When you first listen to it, there’s a chance you’ll wonder what’s wrong with your stereo! 

It’s hard to talk about instrumentals because… they’re instrumentals: It’s difficult to say, “The song is about this,” because technically it isn’t about anything. And I never know what to name them, either, so I figure, why not pay homage to my favorite writers and borrow their titles? I’ve named a few of my songs after Southern Gothic stories, and this one comes from “Everything That Rises Must Converge,” which is a Flannery O’Connor story.”

The end of 2008 saw Grieves enlisting the help of friend and collaborator Budo to co-produce Together/Apart bringing his signature swiss-army knife, multi-instrumental backdrop to Grieves' hauntingly poignant narrative. The album began taking shape in New York as the two built off the success 88 Keys and Counting had generated and paired it with the intensity they developed from  their live performances.  The recording process began to shadow the theme of the album as it saw tracks recorded in Colorado and Washington in addition to New York, infusing it with a mixture of regional influences while still maintaining a cohesive sound.  As the album neared completion the title took on a double meaning for Grieves as he explored new subject matter in the absence of trust, refuge in addiction, acceptance and honesty in self-reflection, and trying to find his place in the world without forgetting his roots.  

Together/Apart concludes three years of self-discovery that has ultimately lead to Grieves' most emotionally charged and daring album to date.

“I had this idea to make a video for ‘A Case For Shame’ which actually ended up informing the entire visual scheme of Innocents. In the video, someone dies – maybe they killed themselves out of a sense of shame – and they enter this other world, populated by these ghost creatures wearing masks. They look scary, but they’re actually covering their face because they’re ashamed. When you see someone wearing a scary mask, the first thought is, “What’s going on? That’s intimidating.” But they’re actually hiding – it’s the most blatant act of concealing oneself. ‘A Case For Shame” is one of two songs I collaborated on with Cold Specks. She’s quite shy, and preferred to be left alone in the studio, so I’d hit ‘record,’ go have some tea, then come back in and press ‘stop.’”


A Case For Shame (feat. Cold Specks)

When John McGough and Matt Wanstall collaborated with Rob Roar (Max Linen, Phonetic Recordings) in 2000 to remix Coco and Stonebridge’s “The Beach” they had no idea that the pair of them would still be making music together a decade later as Koru. The Balearic backdrop to the track set the tone for future collaborations - after playing sunset sessions at Ibiza’s legendary Café del Mar John suggested writing together and the pair came up with “The Meeting” (which featured on Café Del Mar’s 25th Anniversary compilation in 2004). Producing classic “chillout” was a new thing for both of them with their wide range of musical activities, but it seemed to come together very easily. A string of tracks for Café Del Mar followed – “Otis”(2005), “Submariner”(2006), “I Believe” (2007), “Closer”(2008), “Hear Me”(2009) and “Can You Feel It Now” (2010).Koru’s sax-centred lounge sounds contain a musicality and invention not always evident on other chill tracks, and an appreciation for their music has grown with every CDM compilation. Noting this in 2010, the laid-back pair finally decided that it was time to put in some proper graft and get together a bigger collection of material! The passing of time, and the process of creating a larger body of work has resulted in an evolution in the sound – it is now a little more vocal orientated but still contains ample amounts of the sax that has drawn so many listeners to Koru. When Liz Sykes (The Paper Tigers) guested on “Hear Me” the pair knew that they had found a vocalist who complimented their sound perfectly with her dreamy, airy delivery. A long-term collaboration has resulted and Liz features on many of the new tracks, both as a writer and vocalist. 
2011 will see an avalanche of Koru material after the “rations” of the past few years! Along with the 4 EPs there are a number of remixes in the pipeline (including some very exciting collaborations) and Liz will now be performing live alongside John and Matt as Koru.
