This was one of the most honourable sets I have played to date. Bruce and the  community at Wytal deeefinitely KNOW how to pull together a top shelf gathering of incredible humans for a proper throw down. This was my 5th time attending and first time playing and I had the pleasure and honour of playing the sunrise set after what was an incredible 24hrs lead up of absolute top shelf tuneage. MASSIVE APPRECIATION going out to Bru and the cru for having me!!! Cannot WAIT for the next one!

Daggers begun his journey as a performing DJ in early 2013 playing for uni parties and commercial crowds. However it wouldn't be until September of the same year when he got his first bass music gig with Ruckus; this marked Daggers' entry into the bass music scene and his first opportunity to share the music that speaks to his heart, namely Dubstep. 

From here Daggers continued down the path of becoming a venerable bass music DJ and in the time between now and then has featured on radio stations Joy FM, Kiss Dance music radio, and PBS. As well as dabbling in running his own local nights, Daggers has been heavily involved with a number of Melbourne crews over the years such as Ruckus, Dark Riddims, Delight, and Twisted Audio, and has been a guest DJ playing for many others. He's hosted a regular internet radio show on TRNSMT which featured himself joined by Melbourne bass locals, and, has supported Headline DJs such as: Truth, The Upbeats, Hamdi, Sub Focus, Spoonbill, and Compa just to name a few. He's also been invited to take bass music out of the club and out to the bush to play festivals such as Earthcore, Subspace, and more recently Sub-Terra, from which this mix was derived

This 2 hour exploration of the sound of Dubstep aims to showcase Daggers' diverse sonic pallet of the genre, and the styles of 140 that have come to be associated with his sets. This aural exposition of a Decade of Daggers not only exists to show off Daggers' selection and mixing prowess, but also bring to the forefront some of his own cannonisation of Dubstep's past, present and future.

With over ten years of crate digging, performing, and community building under his belt. Daggers has gone from a humble selector to one of Melbourne's standout bass music curators.

For me, music and performance has always been about encouraging people to look outside of themselves, to engage in community, and to recognize the importance of solidarity across race, class, gender .. across borders. 

The mic was not included in this recording, so I am including below the words that I spoke at the beginning of my set. These words came from a place of wanting attendees to start off the festival rooted in respect for place.  For many years I have been an advocate for harm reduction and community care, but respect for the earth is tied into respect for humanity. 

It's all related though, can't you see? The genocide we are currently witnessing in Palestine is an assault against people, culture, and land. We live in a globalized society -- the money we spend, the culture we create, the actions we take, they all have influence around the world.  Many people want their art disconnected from 'politics'.  To me, to be silent, is the most political statement you can make right now.

I want to unofficially welcome you to the forest, where pleasure and play and a weekend of joy are before us.  
But I also want to welcome you to this forest, where the birds and the trees and the river and the breeze have been here long before us. 

We are nestled and nurtured by this ecosystem
the branches shelter you
the roots carry you
the river soothes you
will this sway the things that you do?

step softly, tread lightly
I encourage you to allow yourself to feel spritely
and to be aware of the ways you leave your impact here
on the river bank, on the soil, on this place we hold so dear

and maybe you will begin to allow yourself to be impacted
can you feel the river running through your veins?

will this sway the things that you do? 

because this forest is not yours or mine

For our first mix of the year, we have Calgary-based Drum & Bass DJ and promoter, Swayze, who truly embodies the collective and cultural spirit of the genre. Representing Sub Chakra, a collective engaged in spreading soundsystem culture, Swayze is an incredibly important cog of Calgary's thriving Drum & Bass scene.

When asked to deliver a mix for Unchained, Swayze dug deep into his influences that originally got him to love the genre.

korvidae (formerly known as Nausikaa) flies in the darkness carrying sounds from the underground.  Their wings beat with low end bass, deep dubstep & DnB, weaving in RnB and Hip Hop influences.   A settler currently living in Mi'kmaki, they are inspired by outlaws and rebels across the globe.
