In Praise of Shadows: three paper players and electronics ACME - Excerpt

RuaidhriMannion is an Irish composer and sonic artist living in London who specialises in combining electronic sounds with classical instruments and multimedia to create immersive and evocative live concert experiences. He is a Royal College of Music Scholar, who has recently completed his doctorate under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Cole and Gilbert Nouno (IRCAM), and generously supported by the Soirée d'Or Award. He is Head of Music at Brunel University of London where he teaches Music Technology, Production and Composition.

In recent years his work he been an Associate Composer of the London Symphony Orchestra and commissioned to compose two works for new LSO Soundhub, premiered at LSO St Luke's. In 2024 he was commissioned by the award-winning FUKIO Saxophone Quartet in Cologne, Germany to compose 'Scaradh Anama le Corp' for sax quartet and live electronics. Other commissions include: the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain in Switzerland to create 'Mise en Abyme', an immersive multimedia creation co-authored with the composer, Benoit Moreau; the Whitecube Gallery, London to compose music for the ‘Tribunal of the Dusk’ installation with artist, Eloise Hawser; a saxophone sextet commission for the Royal Academy of Art's 'Sensing Spaces: Architecture Reimagined' exhibition; and an interactive electroacoustic performance at the Tate Modern's critically acclaimed 'Matisse: The Cut-Outs' exhibition.

His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, RINSE FM, Resonance FM, Radio Télévision Suisse, BBC Radio 1 NI, BBC Radio Foyle, RCA Radio and been performed in venues such as Kings Place, Whitechapel Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Cadogan Hall, Sonic Arts Research Centre, National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Modern.

Kotoka Suzuki / 鈴木琴香 is a composer focusing on both multimedia and instrumental practices. She has produced several large-scale multimedia works, including spatial interactive audio-visual work for both concert and installation settings, often in collaboration with artists and scholars from other disciplines.  Her work reflects on life, breath and wind, and often conceives of sounds as physical form to be manipulated through the sculptural practice of composition.  

Her work has been featured internationally by performers such as Arditti String Quartet, Pacifica String Quartet, Continuum, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM), Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra (Germany), and Earplay Ensemble, at numerous venues and festivals such as Ultraschall, ISCM World Music Days, ZKM Media Museum, Inventionen, The Stone, ICMC and Music at the Anthology (MATA).  Among the awards she has received include DAAD Artist in Resident Berlin (Germany), Bourges Prize in Multimedia, Norton Stevens and North Shore fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, Howard Foundation Fellowship, and Robert Fleming Prize from Canada Council for the Arts.  She has held residencies at MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Djerassi, Ucross and Center for Arts and Media (ZKM).  

Her work is published on Edition RZ, EMF Media, IMEB records and Signpost Music.  She is an associate composer at the Canadian Music Centre since 2001.

Reilly Spitzfaden (they/them) is a composer who likes noise, code, electronics, and nostalgia. They build handmade electronic instruments, design interactive software interfaces, and repurpose audio and telecommunications equipment as instruments.

Reilly's recordings appear on How Things Are Made, S3E02; in the Media Sandbox and Michigan State University Department of Theatre film (313) Choices; and on the recording Statements with the Michigan State University composition studio. Reilly’s compositions have been performed at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse and the TaPIR Lab, and by the Eastman BroadBand, members of ensemble mise-en, the Amaranth Quartet, OSSIA New Music, and How things are made.

Reilly is currently a lecturer in music technology at SUNY Geneseo. They hold a PhD in composition from the Eastman School of Music where they studied with Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, David Liptak, and Oliver Schneller; an MA in composition from Eastman, where they studied with Robert Morris and Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez; and a BM in composition from Michigan State University.

Clare Shore, the second woman to earn the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition from The Juilliard  School, has received critical acclaim for her works, with reviewers from the New York Times, New York Post, Boston Globe, Washington Post and others hailing her works as "provocative" … "immensely  dramatic" … ""unpretentious" … "ingenious and evocative" … "intriguing" … "romantic to the core". While at  Juilliard Ms. Shore studied with David Diamond, Vincent Persichetti and Roger Sessions, and subsequently with Gunther Schuller. Since then, she has received numerous commissions, awards, and grants, including a  Composer Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Shore has served on the faculties of Fordham University, Manhattan School of Music, the University of Virginia, George Mason University, and Palm Beach Atlantic University. She currently holds an exclusive publishing contract with E.C. Schirmer. Her works are recorded on CRS, Owl Recordings, and Opus One, produced by Grammy Award-winning Elite Recordings.
