Techno

London based Italian-Ivorian Producer and DJ Ehua has been taking the UK music scene by storm for a number of years. Following her debut on London based label Femme Culture ‘Diplozoon’, Ehua continued their strong string of releases from Nervous Horizon to Orphan Records: a string of releases which, over the years, has accompanied playing at some of the biggest UK clubs and festivals.
In 2019 Ehua soundtracked 'M I R R O R S', a live audio/visual dance performance that toured across Africa in association with ‘GRIOT’ the online magazine that Ehua co-runs with Johanne Affricot and Eric Otieno. GRIOT’s main focus is to amplify contemporary culture, arts, music and style from Africa and the African diaspora.

Ehua’s connection to the music is clear to see and it runs heavily through everything that they are involved in. Their own sonics are a hybrid of beautiful African percussion and rhythms fused with hypnotic minimal techno, and the driving movement in the music means that throughout Ehua’s sets and productions it is almost impossible to dance.

Bugs Groove is a committed explorer of all shades of deep and dark electronics. First cutting his teeth as a DJ in his native Manchester, he then moved to Leeds for a few years to continue his musical activities, before recently making the move back home.

He's already firmly rooted himself in the city. Before his time in Leeds, you could find him playing regular stints in the SOUP bar and occasionally working behind the counter at Eastern Bloc, the tastefully curated record shop and music space in the Northern Quarter.

He's continued to put the graft in, and in the process has founded several of his own platforms as a way to celebrate the music and artists that inspire him. A few years back he launched Techno.logy, an underground mix series and community space that champions techno in its many forms, and more recently he's jumped into the world of promoting with his new club night Ost, bringing over the likes of Nick Höppner and Tama Sumo to play alongside himself.

There's plenty on the agenda gig-wise this year, both on home turf and overseas, so to kick off his summer schedule we asked him to take control of today's 'Shine A Light On' Mix. It's a real journey through the sounds that make up Bugs Groove's sound world. Starting at 96bpm and working his way all the way up to 175, he navigates everything from dub techno, minimal, electro and ghetto through to DnB, jungle, grime and much more.

One third of Livity Sound draws for unreleased heat. 

Kowton’s first singles came under the name Narcossist back in 2008-9 (he also delivered a FACT mix back then), but it was after settling on Kowton as his full-time name that he stepped up his productivity, releasing a succession of singles on labels based in his then-hometown of Bristol (as well as an often-overlooked pair of trips to London’s Keysound) and forming the Livity Sound collective/label with Peverelist and Asusu. It was this period where he started to really find his own sound, combining dub-style delays, grimey strings and distortion on tracks like ‘TFB’ and ‘Des Bisous’.

Presumably due to the development and popularity of Livity Sound’s live show, Kowton’s solo output has slowed down over the last couple of years, though he released the twinkling ‘Glock & Roll’ on Whities last year, and this month dropped a new solo single ‘On Repeat’, which combines wide-eyed rave chords with the sort of colossal drums that feel like classic Kowton. His FACT mix, he tells us, “sums up where I’m at right now musically: music for dancefloors that stands up to repeat listening; rhythmic and repetitive tracks that are heavy but don’t shy away from detail. It’s mostly unreleased and I’ve tried as best possible to piece all these angular sounds together in a way that flows but also gives variation. I think it just about works.”

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Music producer and DJ, I like it simple like that.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. The first party I threw with friends and played in NY was I think in 2011 at this bar in Manhattan called Stay. It had a hidden basement.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I wanted something that overall felt gentle and daytimey and I wanted to throw in a couple of curve balls along the way ;-)
