Wednesday, November 6th.
The city is underwater. The national guard is coming. Martial law is in effect. But the criminal element never sleeps. Looting and lawlessness will be rampant... in the parts of the city no one can get to. I can already see… things will get worse before they get better. And some will seize the chance to grab everything they can. I'm starting to see now… I have had an effect here. But not the one I intended. Vengeance won’t change the past. Mine… or anyone else’s. I have to become more. People need hope. To know someone’s out there for them. The city's angry. Scarred. Like me. Our scars can destroy us. even after the physical wounds have healed. But if we survive them, they can transform us. They can give us the power… to endure. And the strength to fight.

The mask is a symbol. Some fear it. But for others, it brings hope.

One night ALWAYS makes the difference.

When the mugger or the thief stop to think twice— THAT is fear. THAT is what I am. That is why they hired ASSASSINS— because I am the reason the criminals breathe easier when the sun rises.

Every time I put on that suit, it’s my chance to help people who are in trouble. I guess on a personal level, it’s my chance to look like a worthwhile human being again. In my eyes… no else’s.

And until we meet again, boys and girls, know that wherever evil lurks, in all its myriad forms, I’ll be there; with the hammers of justice, to fight for decency and defend the innocent. Goodnight.

After they leave, you’re going to be scared. Scared for a while. And that’s fine. Be scared. Everyone gets scared. But remember, all that means is everyone gets the opportunity to fight that fear. Everyone gets the chance to be brave.

I never thought I’d feel fear like that again. I thought I’d mastered all of that. I mean… I’m not afraid to die. But I realize now… there’s something I haven’t got past. This… fear… of ever going through any of that again… of losing somebody I care about.

In the city today, Alfred, now more than ever, evil men, sick men, they step from the shadows to kill and terrify, and Batman will draw their fire. He will be the lighting rod. He will show the people of Gotham not to be afraid. It’s the thing, Alfred. It’s what makes me happy. It’s all that makes me happy.

Maybe that’s what Batman is about. Not winning, but failing, and getting back up. Knowing he’ll fail, fail a thousand times, but still won’t give up.

We both looked into the abyss. But when it looked back at us… you blinked.

So that’s what it is. The ears. The belt. The gargoyle. It’s not funny. It’s the choice of a boy. The choice to die. I am Batman. I am suicide.

THIS IS MY WAY.

And the shadows he inhabits are cold… and filled with grief.

Every single cell shrieks. There’s no room for anything else anymore. No feeling but this, no thought but this. I am nothing but agony.
