Lost In Ether | Podcast #201 | Chloe Lula

BIO:

San Francisco-born, Berlin-based artist Chloe Lula has been involved with the electronic music scene for more than a decade, helming record labels and throwing parties for years before beginning to DJ. She started producing her first live sets in 2019, when she completed a month-long artist residency with Drew McDowall of Coil. The experience ignited her confidence in composition and allowed her to combine her classical cello training with electronics, melding granular synthesis with acoustic riffs and metallic percussion to create an alloyed brand of droned-out industrial electronica. Many of these jams ended up becoming the tracks on her debut EP with [aufnahme + wiedergabe], where she’s been a resident for four years.

As a DJ, Chloe has played at Berghain, Tresor, Reaktor, Movement weekend in Detroit, and countless clubs, festivals, and DIY parties across Europe and North America. She’s performed regularly alongside artists like Ron Morelli, Silent Servant, DJ Hell, UVB, Kangding Ray, and Thomas P Heckmann, becoming known for atmospheric sets that dig deep into the niche recesses of electro, wave, industrial, techno, and experimental music. In addition to her career as a musician, she is also the Managing Editor of Resident Advisor, the Critical Beats columnist at The Wire, and a selector for her monthly radio show, ‘No Exit,’ on Refuge Worldwide.

Characterised by a pristine atmosphere, trance-inducing percussion work and a controlled perplexity of unidentified synth sounds, his sets are always a pleasure to get lost in. The persistence in digging through vast worlds of techno he has retained since his beginnings as a member of the Polygon crew have made him one of the most respected selectors in the area. The precision of his fingers when leaning over the mixer indicate a high complexity of thought behind his performance.

For Secret Thirteen journal we have worked on a special slowed down techno recording in the spirit of the live sets we have did for Polar Inertia’s recent exhibitions in Brussels and CCA, Tbilisi.

A couple of months ago we have changed all our gear and equipment, and collected new machines but somehow never had enough time to meet altogether and wire them. Finally, we have decided to hook up our new musical gear and equipment to improvise the future of Polar Inertia’s sound.

It was one of those studio jams you do not want to rush to. We took our time. Slowed down the tempo to 112 bpm and sent all synths through a multitrack recorder to catch every moment of the jam session. During hours of knob twisting we went through several states of mind and different styles.

What we are sharing with Secret Thirteen readers is an edited version of what happened that night.

The Forgotten XCVI: Reka

Samuel Kerridge is one of the most striking techno producers around. Offering up a wall of noise and rhythm, texture and experiential electronics, he stands alone and really doesn’t care what anybody thinks. This attitude allows him to push borders and explore new ground on labels like Downwards, Contort and Blueprint. There Berlin based Brit is as exceptional in the DJ booth ask he is the studio and live arena, and his output remains as vivid and vital as ever six years after his spellbinding debut. 

This mix is arresting from the off. It’s a blizzard of overdriven drums and frazzled synth lines that are impossibly restless and raw. Even the moments of relative emptiness and calm are pregnant with tension and menace before things race off once more and leave you gassing for breath. It’s an impressively exhilarating ride that balances light with dark and calm with chaos in just the right proportions so as to never let up and never let you go.
